Library News and Notes: Digital media lab opens this week at Carson City Library

The library will be closed Monday in observance of Presidents’ Day.For a long time, the Carson City library has been a community destination for computer use. Now, the second floor of the main library (@Two) at 900 N. Roop St. is more wired than ever, with added public computer stations, improved wireless access, games, video and photo equipment, tablets, e-readers and much more. Library patrons are invited to the media lab during the weeklong opening of @Two. The new digital learning center, @Two, has seen a significant increase in class attendance since its soft opening last month. Offering free classes in everything from the most basic computer skills, to job search assistance as well as classes in Spanish, @Two has opportunities for everyone. Calendars with a complete list of scheduled classes are available at the library, and participants can register at www.bookeo.com/carsoncitylibrary. The library mission is to connect and equip schools, businesses, families and the community in order to deliver high quality learning opportunities that enrich time spent in school or strengthen self-directed adult learning. The library aims to support marketable skill building by bridging this area’s digital divide, and in so doing create digitally literate communities. A partnership with the State Library and Archives, Cooperative Libraries Automated Network through the American Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act broadband funding, and for Carson City’s portion a matching grant from the Hop and Mae Adams Foundation, are @Two’s funding sources.Weeklong Calendar:@ The BRIC (business and career-building related programming at our business branch 108 E. Proctor St.:• “LinkedIn for Job Search” Learn how to increase your online presence is available from noon until 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.• “Facebook for Business” Learn the marketing fundamentals of how to use Facebook. The class meets from noon until 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. @Two (second floor of the Main Library, 900 N. Roop St.):• “G-Mail Email Clinic” runs from 10 a.m. until noon. • “Picture This” Get your picture taken and the library will Zombie email it to you.• Basic Computer classes are available at noon Wednesday through Friday. Check the library website for classes. • Tours of the tools and the space are available all week.Special Programs:• An “Open App” presentation, with a projector and computer will be available from 2 until 5 p.m. Friday in the library auditorium.• At 10:30 a.m. Saturday a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at the @Two Digital Learning Center.• An iMovie class, with space limited to 9 students will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday. Participants are asked to bring 5-9 favorite Christmas pictures from last year and instructors will demonstrate how to make a holiday scrapbook for next year.• At 1 p.m. Saturday a class involving YouTube will show attendees how to “share” an iMovie.Nevada NeighborsIn accordance with Presidents’ Day and the recent opening of the Legislature, the Capital City Arts Initiative will present curator Aaron Moulton, who will lead a discussion entitled The Politics of Storytelling. The program begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the auditorium.BookMasters Book ClubWith their current success and recent Super Bowl appearance, the San Francisco 49ers show signs of building a dynasty similar to the one Bill Walsh established during the Joe Montana era. Football fans might be especially interested in this month’s book club selection, “The Score Takes Care of Itself: My Philosophy of Leadership,” by Bill Walsh, Steve Jamison and Craig Walsh. BookMasters finishes its discussion of the book at 6 p.m. Feb. 26 in the library auditorium. The book, which is part of the “last lecture” series, was compiled after Walsh’s death in 2007. Nevada Legal ServicesNevada Legal Services provides free clinics and workshops for those who require assistance with legal self-representation. The clinic, “Self-Help Forms Completion” meets at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in and a discussion entitled “Sealing Criminal Records” meets at 3:30 p.m. the same day.Coming AttractionsBook warehouse equals more sales: One visit to the new Friends of the Library book warehouse illustrates the expanded capabilities and shopping opportunities available at their book sales. Due to the confined space in the Browser’s Corner/auditorium, it was often difficult to display and organize books for sale. Not anymore. The new space, organized like a library, enables the Friends to conduct a monthly book sale and offer a wide variety of materials for readers of all ages. The next book sale will occur March 14 (preview and members day), March 15 and March 16 at the new location, 2311 N. Carson St., behind Denny’s. The Browser’s Corner at the library is open during regular library hours and book donations can be made at the library. The Browser’s Corner Bookstore is only open for monthly book sales.Paula Poundstone rescheduled: Acclaimed, award winning comedienne, star of the NPR show “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me” and national Friends spokesperson for libraries, Paula Poundstone was forced to cancel her appearance in Carson City, due to family illness. Luckily for our community, she has rescheduled her appearance for 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 29 at the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Community Center. Tickets are $45 for reserved seating and $35 for general admission and go on sale Feb. 28.
