Senator Square: National History Day is Tuesday at Carson High

Mr. Carson High candidates have been selected. They will be competing for the crown 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Carson City Community Center. Show tickets are available for purchase from any CHS cheerleader, Mr. Carson High contestants, and Sierra Adrenaline Cheer and Tumbling. Ron James from WILD 102.9 and Ms. Tartan from CHS will be the emcees. Seating is limited. Spring sports try-outs started last week. Keep on the look-out for a great Spring season filled with Carson pride and spirit. (Report submitted by Lydia Lopez, public relations officer for STUCO).NATIONAL HISTORY DAY AT CHSNational History Day makes history come alive for America’s youth by engaging them in the discovery of the historic, cultural and social experiences of the past. Through hands-on experiences and presentations, today’s youth are better able to inform the present and shape the future. This year’s theme is “Turning Points in History: People, Events, Ideas.” More than 100 students from Mrs. Fagundes’ honors world history classes have been researching various strands of this topic and have prepared projects that demonstrate their knowledge of the topic. These projects will be part of a competition and exhibition to be held at Carson High School on Tuesday. There will be winners chosen from a panel of judges in each of the various categories of projects. Students created websites, documentaries, historical papers, and mini-museum like exhibits to bring their topics to life. The winners will advance to the State National History Day to be held in March. Winners at the state level then qualify for the National History Day national competition to be held in June at the University of Maryland. Good luck to CHS students. Purchase your ticket today from a cheerleader or a Mr. Carson High contestant.SENIOR SPOTLIGHTThis week Carson High School is proud to spotlight Krista Stocke. Krista maintains a 4.42 GPA. Her classes include numerous Advanced Placement and Honors courses. Krista’s future plans include attending San Diego State University to study biology. She is very active at Carson High School, participating in National Honor Society, Link Crew, Key Club and varsity tennis. This past summer, Krista was chosen to attend the Rotary Student Youth Leadership Awards Camp. While at this camp, she learned and participated in a program called “Breaking Down the Walls.” The program is a process of activities that teaches others how to break down their personal walls in order to be more open with themselves and with others. The goal being that if you see others as a person, like yourself, then you tend to treat them as a person and not an object, thus more kind. Krista loved the program so much, that she brought it back to Carson High and trained more than 100 students in the process. She then worked alongside her mom, who is a teacher at Eagle Valley Middle School, and taught the process to 60 kids there. Krista has also started a Facebook page called: “Simple Senator Kindness, Be the Change.” This page is dedicated to the simple acts of kindness that occur daily. This page is a place to share acts of kindness and thoughts of gratitude. To know Krista, is to know that she emulates this attitude and is a true role model of thoughtfulness and caring to others around her.
