PREP: Carson boys host Hug today

Coming off a 1-3 effort down in San Diego, the Carson High boys basketball team hosts Hug at 3 p.m. today at Morse Burley Gym in a Division I crossover game.Carson is currently 3-1 in Division I play and 8-6 overall.The Senators are hoping to have the services of Rafe King, who injured his right shoulder down in San Diego. Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia said King will be a game-time decision.“We’re hoping to have him (King),” Mendeguia said. “I sent him to see a physical therapist (Mike Bernhard) and he thought Rafe would be OK. Mike gave Rafe a couple of exercises to do. It’s hard to judge somebody’s tolerance to pain, though.”Mendeguia said that Charlie Banfield, who went on a family vacation over the Christmas break, isn’t expected to play.On Saturday, the Senators travel to Bishop Manogue for a 1:30 p.m. Sierra League contest.Dayton boys edge Silver StageSILVER SPRINGS — Bernardo Macias scored 25 points to lead Dayton’s boys basketball team to a 38-37 win over Silver Stage Thursday afternoon.The loss upped Dayton’s record to 3-9 overall heading into Tuesday’s home game at 7:30 p.m. against a very solid South Tahoe squad.Dayton wiped out an 11-point halftime deficit to grab its first Northern IA victory of the season. The Dust Devils’ previous two wins were in tournaments.“We just chipped away,” said Dayton coach Jason Santos. “We got in the double bonus in the middle of the third quarter and made some free throws.“Bernardo didn’t have a huge mismatch. He was aggressive and able to finish. Hopefully it will be a breakout game for him.”Dayton girls grab first victorySILVER SPRINGS — Cheyenne Strong, Taylor Ingersoll and Maribel Ledezma combined for 31 points to lead the Dust Devils to their first victory of the season, a 46-18 win over Silver Stage in a Division IA basketball game.Strong led the way with 11Dayton is now 1-9 heading into Tuesday’s game at home against South Tahoe at 6 p.m.“It (the win) felt pretty good,” Dayton coach Cliff Serawop. “We needed to go all out (from the outset). We pressed right off the bat and didn’t give them a chance to set up.“Defensively, they were focusing on Taylor, and that left Cheyenne open.”Strong scored nine of her 11 to help Dayton build an 18-4 first-quarter lead.
