Carson wrestlers win Granada tourney

LIVERMORE — Kyle Sharp won the 120-pound title and Cole McCarthy was second at 132 to lead Carson High to the championship in the Granada Mat Classic on Saturday at Granada High School.Forty-five teams were entered in the event. Carson finished with 160 points, Benicia was second with 138.5 and Hughson was third at 135.Sharp went 4-0, winning twice by fall and twice by decision. McCarthy went 3-1, losing 9-4 in the finals.“It was a pretty good tournament for us,” coach Tim McCarthy said. “We had a very good day. It was a little odd we won and only had one champion. We had that many placers.“We saw the Sammy Mercado of old today. He and Colby Brown really came on this week.”Mercado placed third at 113, going 4-1. Brady O’Keefe (145) and Jordan Luhrs (171) also placed third. Nicholas Lani (138) and Brady Rivera (182) were fifth. Nolan Shine was seventh at 152 and Brown was eighth at 160.JV WRESTLINGSchilling finished sixthSPARKS — Carson’s Skylar Schilling finished sixth in 152-pound weight class at the Sparks JV wrestling tournament on Saturday. Schilling went 4-3 during the tournament. Also making it to day 2, but not placing were Elijiah Fajayan at 145 pounds, Alex Cunningham at 145 pounds, Tristian Wadsworth at 138 pounds, Brent Lauderbaugh at 152 pounds and James Dondelinger at 195 pounds. Carson hosts the Senator JV Tournament on Saturday.VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALLDouglas 75, Reed 67 2 OTMINDEN — What failed the Douglas boys basketball team over the final two minutes of regulation against Reed was the very thing that ended up sealing a 75-67 win for the Tigers in double overtime Saturday afternoon.It came down to free throw shooting.After battling back and forth through the majority of four quarters, Douglas appeared to take control for good after building a six-point lead over Reed with 56.5 seconds left.The Raiders, though, refused to go away and capitalized on a 2-for-7 performance at the free throw line by the Tigers down the stretch (1-for-5 over the final 30 seconds) to send the game into overtime tied at 59.Reed hit a pair of free throws, nailed a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left and then benefited from a goaltending call on their final shot with 1.9 seconds left to tie things up.The teams each hit a single 3-pointer to account for all of the scoring in the first overtime. Reed's Trae Wells, who finished with a game-high 25 points, had a potential game-winning layup rim out at the buzzer.In the second overtime, Douglas started the scoring with a 3-pointer from Pat Johnson (who also opened the scoring in the first overtime with a 3-pointer) and went on to sink nine consecutive free throws to put away the win.Johnson led the Tigers with 15 points in the win. Hunter Myers had Douglas' only other field goal of the two overtimes and finished with 14 points. Austin Evans came up with 13 points, Joe Syammach had 10 and Michael Nolting had eight points.Douglas improved to 4-1 in Northern Division 1 action in its first home game in a full month. The Tigers travel to Damonte Ranch Tuesday night and host Hug on Friday. JV BOYS BASKETBALLCarson drops twoCarson High went 0-2 this week, falling 62-56 to visiting Hug on Friday and 61-40 to Bishop Manogue on Saturday in Reno.In the Manogue loss, Robby Miller led Carson with seven points, while Asa Carter and Ian Schulz added six apiece.In the Hug loss, Carter scored 23 and Miller had 15.JV GIRLS BASKETBALLCarson rolls ManogueMichelle Perry scored 21 points to lead Carson to a 46-27 win over Bishop Manogue at Morse Burley Gym.Ivy Pembrook scored seven for Carson, while Lindy Lehman and Teresa Boehmer added six apiece.FRESHMAN GIRLS BASKETBALLCarson wins bigSerena Miller scored 19 points and Andrea Maffei added 10 to lead Carson to a 52-18 win over Bishop Manogue Saturday at Morse Burley Gym.Taylor Weddell scored eight points and Melissa Glanzmann added five. Glanzmann led in assists with five, while Bailey Allen had four steals. Weddell and Miller each had five rebounds.
