LOCAL: Douglas defense sparkles in win over Miners

MINDEN - The Douglas boys basketball team never trailed in a 68-49 win over Bishop Manogue Tuesday night in a Sierra League contest.

It was a stretch late in the first half though, where the Tigers managed to extend a three-point lead to 10 solely on scoring from the bench, which helped provide the necessary spark in the win.

AJ Pfaffenberger hit a 3-pointer with 3:35 remaining in the half, launching an 11-4 run for Douglas that included a pair of baskets from Joe Syammach, a layup in transition from Tay Simms and a long field goal just inside the 3-point arc from Sam Broersma.

"It was all defense right there," Douglas coach Corey Thacker said. "We had kids coming off the bench and making good contributions. We got some stops and then some extra looks in transition.

"We showed good focus as a whole team as far as everyone showing up and playing their role."

Manogue added a basket just before halftime to cut the Tiger lead to eight at 36-28. Douglas came roaring out of halftime, though, getting six baskets and five stops to open the third quarter while stretching its lead to 48-28.

"I thought defensively we were a lot better in the second half," Thacker said. "We only gave up 21 points, which is a goal for us. We kept guys in the middle and made some good stops."

The Miners put a stop to the run and kept the Tigers off the scoreboard over a nearly-five-minute stretch to close out the quarter. In the interim, Manogue rolled up an 11-0 run of its own to cut the score to 48-39.

"There were a lot of runs from both teams tonight and they got to us a couple time," Thacker said. "That's something we really have to watch. We can't let four points in a row become a bigger run. We have to come back and stop those. We're still looking for a complete 32 minutes."

The Tigers outscored Manogue 20-10 in the final period to put the game away.

Hunter Myers led all scorers in the game with 20, Joe Syammach added 11 and Austin Evans had 10.

Rite of Passage 72, Dayton 57

YERINGTON - Despite having four players score in double figures, the Dust Devils suffered a 15-point loss at the hands of Rite of Passage.

Jessie Evans and Steve Thompson scored 12 points apiece, while Bernardo Macias and Josh Joyner added 10 each.

Silver Stage visits Dayton at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Manogue 72, Douglas 36

MINDEN - After sticking with league-leading Manogue for the first quarter Tuesday night, the Douglas girls basketball team fell victim to some sharp outside shooting from the Miners.

Four of the Miners first five baskets were from behind the arc and Manogue hit nine 3-pointers in the game en route to a lopsided win.

"We played the game we wanted to that first quarter and had them within a couple baskets, but we had a lapse in taking care of the ball and they took advantage," Douglas coach Werner Christen said. "Good teams do that. We have to move past this one and focus on Carson (Friday night)."

Diana Regalado had 13 points for the Tigers and Desiree Cage added 10.

VOLLEYBALL

Eagle Valley tops South Tahoe

Camiell Simpson had 11 service points, three aces and two kills to lead Eagle Valley's seventh-grade volleyball team to a 25-7 and 25-20 win over South Tahoe in a TahNeva match recently.

Hannah Golik, Blanca Sosa and Brittany Sorensen played well defensively, and Sorensen added five service points. Alexay Sanchez contributed two kills and four service points.

Carson Middle wins big

Carson Middle School's eighth-grade team knocked off South Tahoe 25-9 and 25-4 in a TahNeva match on Tuesday.

Jaycie Roberts led the way with seven kills and five aces, while Natalie Anderson had three kills, 13 aces and nine assists. Keelin Pilgrim had two kills, a dig and two aces. Kylar Leahy had two kills and three aces.

CMS 7th graders win

Carson improved to 2-0 with a 18-25, 25-17 and 15-4 win over South Tahoe on Tuesday afternoon.

Abigail Pradere had five aces and seven assists, Abbey Paulson contributed 10 assists, Brynn Lehman finished with five digs, Emily Heinz had five aces and Dajarrah Navarro had three blocks and four aces.

CHEER CAMP

High school group hosts event

The Carson High cheerleaders are hosting a cheerleader camp Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to noon. The camp is open to kids in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Cost of the camp is $20 if you pre-register and $25 at the door. You get an additional $5 off if you are a returning participant.

Water and a snack will be provided.
