PREP: Carson ski teams finish 6th, 7th

Carson High’s ski teams finished sixth and seventh, respectively, at Monday’s meet at Homewood Ski Resort.The boys squad finished sixth. Ian VanRensselaer was the top finisher with a 31st place in 79.69 for his two runs. Fritz Steinle was 33rd in 81.52, and Nick Green was 35th in 83.65.Kylee Johnson led the girls squad with an 84.93 for her two runs, good for 32nd and Allison Greene was 35th in 91.06. Carson had two skiers who failed to complete two runs. BOYS BASKETBALLDOUGLAS 72, NORTH VALLEYS 43While the Douglas boys’ basketball team was busy breezing past the North Valleys Panthers Tuesday night, the Spanish Springs Cougars were in the process of giving the Tigers a gift.Douglas had little trouble with North Valleys, leading 12-2 after two minutes, 25-9 after six and 45-26 at halftime. They held the Panthers to just 17 second half points and claimed a 72-43 road win.Meanwhile, Spanish Springs shocked Galena, 59-53, moving Douglas into sole possession of first place in the Sierra League heading into Friday night’s showdown with the Grizzlies (7 p.m. tipoff in Minden). Galena is the lone team to beat Douglas in league play this season.Douglas continued to flex its defensive muscle Tuesday night, holding a team to less than 50 for the fourth consecutive game. It was also Douglas’ eighth-consecutive win.The Tigers were able to build the bulk of their lead by getting transition baskets off stops provided by its strong pressure defense.Austin Evans led the Tigers with 14 points, Hunter Myers scored 13. FERNLEY 64, DAYTON 42FERNLEY — Marcos Saylor led the Dust Devils with 12 points, but it wasn’t enough as Fernley topped Dayton on Tuesday.Jessie Evans and Jeff Brooks each added eight.Dayton plays Friday against Fallon. VARSITY GIRLSNORTH VALLEYS 48, DOUGLAS 43Douglas fell 48-43 at North Valleys on Tuesday night.The Panthers built a 27-14 lead on the Tigers through the first half and later extended it to 31-17 before the Tigers were able to claw back into it.“We just got out-coached and out-played tonight,” Douglas coach Werner Christen said. “We said before the game we have to keep them from getting second shots, from staying in the game early and letting them out-tough us. All of those things happened. “It’s a tough one to lose. When we got down big like that, it was just a long climb back.”Diana Regalado led the Tigers with 18 points, Corryne Millett had six and Ericka Munoz scored four.FERNLEY 48, DAYTON 28The Dayton girls basketball team couldn’t buy a bucket in a 20-point loss to Fernley on Tuesday.Dayton made only one fourth quarter basket. Lettie Lynch led the team with eight points. Maribel Ledezma added six points.Dayton hosts Fallon on Friday.JV BOYSREED 59, CARSON 55SPARKS — Carson went 7-for-22 at the line and lost a close one to the Raiders on Tuesday.Asa Carter led Carson with 27, while Ian Schulz added seven. Jared Rooker chipped in six for CHS.JV GIRLSCARSON 47, REED 24Carson’s press break lifted the Senators to a 47-25 win over Reed on Tuesday. Michelle Perry scored 12 points, Christina Boiling added 11 points. Bethany Kniffen and Ivy Pembrook each added seven points. Carson scored 29 second-half points to put the game away. Carson, 10-1 in league play, plays at Manogue on Friday.FRESHMEN GIRLSCARSON 31, REED 24Carson had a balanced scoring attack in a 31-24 win over Reed on Tuesday. Bailey Allen, Andrea Maffei, Brianna Alvarado and Melissa Glanzmann all added seven points. Alvarado added 11 rebounds. Carson plays at Manogue on Friday.
