Carson City 11-12 squad knocked out by Washoe

And then there none.

Carson City’s 11-12 all-star squad was thumped by Washoe, 12-2, in a loser’s bracket game in the District 1 Championships Tuesday night, dropping Carson into the consolation bracket which wiped out its chances for a district tile.

Carson, which has lost two straight after opening the tournament with an 11-0 win over Truckee, plays its first consolation game tonight at 8. The 11-12s are the only Carson team still playing.

After each team wasted a scoring opportunity in the first, Washoe drew first blood in the second inning.

Luke Jacksick doubled and Tyler Hopper walked to start the inning. With one out, Gunner Gouldsmith blooped a ball near the line in right, which Ian Pettersen mishandled allowing Jacksick to score. Hopper scored on Jack Weise’s groudball to second base to make it 2-0.

Then came Carson’s only bright moments.

Landon Truesdale and Josh Buchan hit back-to-back homers off Cole Demosthenes, tying the game at 2. Carson didn’t get a hit the rest of the five-inning game, and only had two baserunners.

Carson made three errors in the next inning, which enabled Washoe to score four times and take a 6-2 lead. The big blows were a two-run double by Aiden Elliott and a solo homer by Jacksick.

In the fourth, Washoe sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five times to increase its lead to 11-2.

Carson starter Cole Salacies departed after giving up singles to Weise, Josh Menante and Demosthenes to start the fourth. Demosthenes’ single scored Weise, and Brian Baker followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Menante for an 8-2 lead. Elliott followed with his second double to make it 9-2. Jacksick singled home Elliott for a 10-2 advantage, and an error brought in the final run of the inning.

Carson went out quietly in the fifth, and then Demosthenes ended the game on the mercy rule with a towering homer to center.

Carson managed just four hits, one each by Good, Teigen Key, Buchan and Truesdale.

Washoe managed 13 hits, including four by Demosthenes and three by Jacksick.

CARSON 9-10s LOSE

Carson Valley pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth to edge Carson City, 3-2, at Governors Field, eliminating the locals from the tournament.

Carson struck first in the opening inning when Kobe Morgan singled with one out and advanced to third on a single by Kyle Navarro. Brian Guthrie was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tyler Gurrieri doubled home both runners for a quick 2-0 lead.

Carson Valley scored one in the first and one in the third to tie the game.

In the first, Luke Ackerman singled and moved to second on a passed ball. He reached third when Chris Thacker’s ball was misplayed and scored on Matthew Goff’s sacrifice fly.

In the third, Anthony Menzer doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Thacker, tying the game at 2.

Carson Valley threatened in the seventh when Camden Brown singled, stole second and reached third on an infield out. He was stranded, however, when Ackerman grounded out.

Carson loaded the bases in the eighth, but Austin Grant struck out the dangerous Justin Nussbaumer to end the threat.

Reliever Ethan Foley, who took over for Isaac Nelson, retired the first two batters in the bottom of the eighth. Goff walked and was replaced on the basepaths by Luke Rodina. Luke Cochran followed with a single to advance Rodina to second. Calvin Doerr walked to load the bases and Brown singled to win the game.

Brown finished with three hits for Carson Valley.

Nelson was stout on the hill, allowing two runs and four hits. Brown worked 5.2 innings, allowing two runs and six hits. Grant picked up the win in relief, while Foley took the loss.

Morgan led the Carson attack with two hits, while Chase Wixon, Navarro, Gurrieri, Nelson and Nussbaumer added a hit each.
