Carson Tigersharks swimmers AJ Gutierrez and Ewan Kalley were the second high-point winners in their respective age groups at the recent Swimming at Altitude short course meet at South Lake Tahoe.
Gutierrez, 12, won the 50 back stroke and placed second in the 100 IM, 100 free, 200 IM and 500 free. He had thirds in the 50 free, 50 fly, 100 back and 200 free. He was fourth in the 50 breast.
Kalley, 6, won the 25 and 50 back and the 25 fly. He was second in the 25 free, 25 breast, 50 breast, 50 free and 100 free.
Brett Kolb, Madeline Carine, Michelle Harrison, Nick Melsheimer, Kennedy Redican, Nora Steng and Nicole Van Geel were top three in their age groups.
Kolb, 13, was runner-up in the 100 and 200 back, and 500 free. Carine, 15, won the 200 fly and was third in the 100 fly. Harrison, 15, was second in the 100 breast and third in the 500 free. Melsheimer, 8, was second in the 25 fly, while Redican, 8, was second in the 50 breast. Steng, 15, had a second in the 100 back and 200 IM, and Van Geel, 13, won the 400 IM plus had seconds in the 200 back and 500 free.
Carson cagers take 2nd in nationals
Carson City’s AAU 8th grade basketball team finished second at the West Coast Division III National Championships in Anaheim in late June.
The team lost 48-35 to Nikkos from Orange County in the finals.
Nikkos dealt Carson its only loss in pool play. The Carson squad bounced back with a 61-29 win over the Eastvale Warriors and then a 62-18 victory over the Baseline Basketball squad. In bracket play, Carson topped the Orlando Johnson Basketball Academy of Monterey, 47-39, and then topped Las Vegas Elite, 50-42, which put it in the finals against Nikkos.
Members of the team are Tez Allen, Jayden DeJoseph, Brandon Gagnon, Jesse Lopez, Jace Keema, Conner Larkin, Sevon Mandoki, Alec Piersob, Geraet Rauh and Greg Wallace. The team was coached by Jeremiah Gray and Keith Larkin.
Okimura foursome wins tournament
Bret Okimura, Dave Waldon, Gary Sheerin and Rob Jennings teamed up for a 117 to win the Thunder Canyon Progressive best-ball event on July 12.
Bill Stanley, Bob Bittman, Jeff Guso and Hunter Quistagard were second at 120, while Dave Mello, Mike Judge, John Anderson and Norm Deputy were third at 122.
• Jennifer Clements finished with a 28 in the women’s event, which was the best score on two par-5s, two par-4s and two par-3s. Carol Boice, Shirley Westfall and Shelly Brewster tied for second at 29 with Claudia Goodnight taking fifth at 30.
Ursula Tracy and Jerry Hughes won closest-to-the-hole honors.
Bloom, Smith win at Silver Oak
Tim Bloom and Tona Smith won their respective flights for the Silver Oak Men’s Club in their modified Stableford event on July 9.
Bloom had 32 points, while James Barnett and Lew Dodgion were second with 26. Smith finished with 40, eight better than Mel Younker and Rion Causey.
Bruce Kozak, Alex Talmant. Causey and Roger Cartwright were closest to the hole winners.
Arens foursome wins CVGC Stableford event
Jim Arens, Gary Carsten, Marc Menezes and Charles Poe racked up 98 points to win the Carson Valley Men’s Club Stableford scoring event on July 14.
There was a two-way tie for second place at 96. Gary and Jeff Schreiber, Paul Lockwood and John Guidicatti comprised one group, while Matt Budjako, Augie Martinez, Gerry Bing and Brent Holderman were members of the other deadlocked group.
Baughman records ace at Silver Oak
Dennis Baughman recorded a hole-in-one on the 124-yard sixth hole at Silver Oak using a pitching wedge.
Witnessing the shot were Jim and Kevin Silsby and William Kapczynski.
Tennis tournament set for Centennial
The 2013 Compass, a mixed tennis tournament, is being held on July 27-28 at Centennial Park.
Dan Hannah, tournament coordinator, is hoping to draw 16 teams to the event. The cost with Carson Tennis Club members is $25 and a team of non-CTC members is $30.
