Water history tour in Spooner Backcountry is set

Cheryl Surface will lead a Comstock water history tour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 9 in the Spooner Backcountry. Participants will meet at Spooner Lake Park’s upper parking lot.

The tour will cover the Marlette Water System, Red House, Hobart Reservoir, Marlette Lake and the Flume Trail. Participants are asked to brink a lunch, water, a light jacket, camera and comfortable shoes. The cost is $20 per person.

Cow Country Ball fundraiser is Aug. 17

Volunteer Attorneys for Rural Nevadans will host its annual Cow Country Ball 4-8 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Corley Ranch in Gardnerville.

The event offers activities for children, live music, a hosted bar, raffle and silent auction. The dress code is casual western.

Tickets cost $50 per person or $375 for a table of eight, with dinner and beverages included. Children age 12 and younger eat for free. Proceeds benefit Volunteer Attorneys for Rural Nevadans and the Domestic Violence Victim’s Assistance Project.

Native American Arts Festival starts Saturday

“Wa She Shu It’ Deh” Native American Arts Festival will be 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at Tallac Historic Site in South Lake Tahoe, located about two miles past the intersection of highways 50 and 89.

The event offers Native American arts and crafts, food vendors, basket competitions, raffle prizes and dance and drum performances. Baskets will be accepted 9-11 a.m. Saturday. Weavers must be Native Americans enrolled with a recognized tribe.

Artists must be present to win.

Princess and superhero camps are planned

The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson St., will hold “Princess in Training” camp from 10:30 a.m. to noon Aug. 17 and a “Superhero in Training” camp from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 17.

The camps are open to children age 3 and older.

There will be obstacle courses, face painting, games, art activities, photo opportunities and more.

The cost is $25 per child.

Annual barbecue is Saturday in Virginia City

The 52nd annual Storey County Jeep Posse Barbecue will be 5 p.m. Saturday at the Ice House, 110 E. Toll Road in Virginia City.

The event offers a steak dinner, music, dancing, Blackjack tables, door prizes and a raffle. Tickets cost $15 per person and can be purchased at the Virginia City Visitors Center, 86 S. C St. All proceeds benefit scholarships for local high school students.

Kit Carson Toastmasters announces club officials

The Kit Carson Toastmasters Club recently elected new officers for the coming year. Mike Davis was elected president, who will be assisted by Fred Daniels, educational vice president; Jim Klipp, membership vice president; Joselio Ramirez, treasurer and Frank Taylor, secretary. The club welcomed new member Tulasi Dasari, a mechanical engineer from India who now resides and works in Carson City.

Gallery reception to mark anniversary Friday

The East Fork Gallery, 1503 Highway 395 in Gardnerville, will celebrate its 34th anniversary with a reception 4-8 p.m. Friday.

Yard sale set to benefit Dayton Food Pantry

The Dayton Food Pantry, 4 Enterprise Way in Dayton, will hold a yard sale fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 3-4. Volunteers are welcome to help set up at 6 a.m.

The sale will offer furniture, housewares, clothing, toys, books and more.

Dayton Food Pantry is open for emergency food needs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Regular distribution days outside of emergency needs are from noon to 3 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month at Sutro Elementary School, 190 Dayton Village Parkway.
