More than $200,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant money was targeted for sidewalk and related improvements in Carson City by the Board of Supervisors Thursday. The project will install Americans with Disabilities Act accessible curb ramps and replace damaged sidewalks in a low-to-moderate income neighborhood south of 5th Street between Roop Street and Saliman Road.Board members favored the $200,732 decision because they were told it can yield, via matching funds, about $800,000 more. The approval was part of the board endorsing advisory committee recommendations regarding various uses in Fiscal Year 2013-14 of Community Support Services Grant (CSSG) and CDBG funding. The board gave approval to $72,200 in CSSG funds in varying amounts for six youth-related programs and grant administration. In addition, the board approved $185,000 in CSSG funds in varying amounts for a dozen service projects, and the $238,245 in CDBG funds for two public facilities projects — including the ADA/ sidewalk upgrade — and one public service project. Additional grant planning and administration costs amount to an estimated $72,000 of the overall estimated $365,000 anticipated in the federal CDBG funds. A 30-day public comment period on the CDBG decisions begins today.
