PREP-JC: WNC softball swept by Snow

EPHRIAM, Utah - Western Nevada College's softball team led early in both games, but ended up losing the doubleheader, 6-3 and 6-4, against Snow College Friday afternoon in a Scenic West Athletic Conference match-up.

The teams meet again in a doubleheader starting at noon. WNC is 5-13 in conference play.

Western took a 2-0 lead in the first when Jenny Quam singled and scored on Sydney Darby's 12th homer of the season. WNC would add just one more run the rest of the way.

Snow fought back with three in the third and three in the sixth to take control against Ali Lostra, who took the loss in the circle.

Alisha Nelson went 3-for-3 and Quam went 2-for-4. Andrea Lee and Cara McCarthy added a hit apiece.

WNC led 4-0 in the third inning of the nightcap thanks to two RBIs from Nelson and one from Darby. Snow scored six unnswered runs to record the sweep.

Nelson went 3-for-4 and Darby went 2-for-4. Quam, Lee, Heather Septon and Jen Reichel added a hit apiece.

PREP SOFTBALL

Carson splits in Sacto

SACRAMENTO - Carson fell to 1-2 on the young season after splitting two games at the Sacramento TOC Friday at the Sacramento Softball Complex.

Carson opened the day with a 6-2 win over Woodland, and followed with a 9-1 loss to Whitney-Rocklin. The Whitney game was stopped on time limit with two outs in the fifth.

Carson plays today at 12:30 in the single-elimination portion of the tournament, Carson could face Reed, El Camino or Placer depending the outcome of late Friday night games.

Erica Watson went the distance against Woodland, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs, both earned. She struck out one and walked one in her 74-pitch effort.

Carson scored one in the first and added two more in the third when Jen Purcell singled home Bailey Allen. Purcell advanced to third on a fielder's choice by Michelle Perry and scored when Perry was caught stealing at second base.

Carson added two in the sixth thanks to two Woodland errors and a hit by Rebecka Breuer. Watson grounded into a double play which produced a run.

Woodland scored both of its runs in the seventh.

Purcell and Breuer led Carson with two hits apiece, while Perry, Sara Brewer, Allen, Watson and Malia Tiffer added a hit apiece.

Carson managed just three hits, one each by Brewer, Tiffer and Perry. Brewer's RBI single in the second accounted for Carson's lone run of the game.

"We saw glimpses of the potential we have in the first game, and in the second game it was our youth," coach Shelby Tuttle said. "Whitney's pitcher was very good."

Muckers win twice

YERINGTON - Virginia City posted two victories at the Yerington Tournament on Friday.

The Muckers knocked off the Yerington JV squad 15-2 and the South Tahoe JV squad 18-10.

Roslyn Esau went 6-for-7 wth 10 RBIs and five runs scored, while Corinna Obermayr went 4-for-7 with six RBIs. Jamie Poston went 5-for-7 with five RBIs.

BASEBALL

Douglas off to 3-0 start

SPARKS - The Douglas High baseball team certainly hasn't suffered a lack of offense through its first three games of the season.

The Tigers, fresh off an 11-0 win over Fallon on Thursday, rung up 12-2 and 8-4 wins over Truckee and Spanish Springs at Spanish Springs on Friday to improve to 3-0 on the young season.

"It was up and down the lineup in both games," Douglas coach Bruce Jacobsen said. "It's funny, there wasn't really one guy that stood out. It was everyone coming up with hits and big plays when we needed them.

"Kaleb Foster and Jimmy King each had home runs, but then you've got Cody Carter putting down a sacrifice bunt and hitting a sacrifice fly to get some rallies going. Chase White hits a two-run triple, Cale Kynett hits a double. Everyone was stepping up today."

Douglas also got standout performances on the mound for the second-straight day.

Junior Kyle Johnson picked up the win against Truckee.

"He threw a lot of strikes, which is exactly what we are looking for," Jacobsen said. "He definitely brought it today. He just keeps getting better for us."

Junior lefty Cole Peck went seven innings in the win over Spanish Springs.

"He went out there and only gave up two runs through the seventh, then they got a base knock that brought two guys home, but we threw the batter out at second, so we exchanged a couple runs for an out," Jacobsen said. "Cole kept us in it and kept them off balance. All day we saw good things, offensively, defensively and pitching. There are a lot of positives to build on already."
