Sermon: Rev. G. R. Davis preached a sermon at the State Prison from the text, "Ye shall seek me early and shall not find me." The prisoners expressed themselves as highly pleased and presented Mrs. Davis with a beautiful toilet box made of inlaid wood. When it was over, Warden Bell found that one of the trustees had escaped. That very morning that trustee, hearing that Mr. Davis was to preach, dropped a tin pan he was holding and lifting both hands exclaimed with delight, "I had rather hear that man preach an hour than have my liberty for a week" - yet he managed to slip off. Warden Bell thinks the language of the text was taken by the man as a hint to leave.
