Prep Roundup: Carson’s Thurman enjoys big day on the track

Elena Thurman won the triple jump and placed second in the 100 and 200 to lead Carson past Reed in a double-dual meet at Carson High on Saturday.

Carson finished with 116 points, while Reed had 86 and Wooster 42. On the boys’ side. Reed edged Carson 112.75-111. Wooster was a distant third with 22.25.

“The girls stepped up big,” Carson coach Robert Maw said. “Elena and Madison (Preston) both went over 35 feet in the triple jump. Madison did a decent job in the long jump. I’m hoping that mark gets Elena looked at for the Arcadia Invitational. Kayla Aikins tied a sophomore school record in the high jump, and the girl throwers stepped up big in both events.”

Thurman went 35-3 1/2 in the triple jump, ran 13.35 in the 100 and 27.61 in the 200. She lost to Reed standout Adriana Newell in both events. Preston was second in the triple jump at 35-1 3/4 and won the long jump with a leap of 15-3 3/4. She was second in the high jump at 4-10. Besides winning the high jump, Aikins won the 800 in 2:44.30.

Courtney Hack won the shot put in 30-9 1/2, Teresa Boehmer was second at 30 feet and Makayla Ragnone was third at 29-10. Boehmer won the discus with a throw of 93-1, Hack was second at 87-5 and Abby Dudley tied for fourth at 83-6.

Alex Drozdoff won the 1600 (5:50) and finished second to teammate Eveline Delgado in the 3200 (12:51.50). Delgado ran a 5:50.60 for second in the 1600 and clocked a 12:48.50 in the 3200. Cindy Juchtzer was third in both races, clocking times of 5:55.30 and 13:16.90, respectively. Athena Favero won the 300 hurdles in 51.13 and was second in the 100 hurdles at 19.26. Sahara Winder was second in the 400 (1:09.90) and Jesse Balkwell was second in the 800 at 2:46.90.

On the boys’ side, Dakota Baker won the 110 hurdles (16.15) and the 300 hurdles (43.52). Nick Greene won the 3200 in 11:12.80 and was fourth in the 1600 (5:03.90). Nathan Hazard won the discus at 145-3 and was fourth in the shot at 45-6. Corey Reid won the high jump at 6 feet, was second in the 110 hurdles with a 17.46 and was third in the pole vault at 10-6. Freshman Asa Carter won the triple jump at 40-3 1/2 and was second in the long jump at 18-3 1/2.

Taylor Bradshaw was second in the 1600 at 4:57.30 and placed fourth in the 200 in 24.78. Matt Nolan was third in the 200 at 24.38. Hector Gomez-Barrios (56.39) and Mathias William (56.96) went 2-3 in the 400. Zach Heinz was third in the 1600 (4:59.0)and Tylar Chester was third in the 3200 at 11:46.80. Jesse Knight was second in the discus at 126-8, while freshman Ian Schulz was third in the discus at 123-5.

“Tyler ran the 1600 for the first time (this year) and broke five minutes,” Maw said. “Nick Greene ran a great race in the 3200, we went 1-3-4 in the 1600 which was good. We swept the discus, so those guys deserve a lot of credit.”

DAYTON COMPETES AT FERNLEY

FERNLEY — Division IA teams converged on Fernley for a meet on Saturday.

Dayton’s Austin Fletcher won the high jump with a mark of 6-feet, while the quartet of Dallon Mendoza, Tyler Brown, Joey Doyle and Andrew Goodman won the 1600 rely in 3:45. Aaron Elissa finished second in the 1600, while Josh Koch was second in the discus with a throw of 135-7. Jesus Castaneda was fourth in the event and Zach Hawley was sixth.

The Dust Devils won both the girls sprint relay events. Kalee Turner was second in the discus.

PREP SOFTBALL

CARSON SWEPT BY MUSTANGS

RENO — Kaylyn Paque showed why she is one of the top pitchers in Northern Nevada. The Damonte Ranch right-hander allowed one run and three hits over 11 innings, as the Mustangs swept Carson, 13-0 and 11-1 in a Sierra League doubleheader Saturday. Both games were stopped because of the 10-run rule.

Carson returns to action Tuesday at home against North Valleys at 3:45 p.m.

In the opener, Damonte scored four in the first, two in the third and seven in the fourth.

Carson’s only hit in the opener came in the second when Ellyse McGowan singled. That was the only inning Carson sent more than three hitters to the plate. Erica Watson took the loss. Carson made nine errors which led to six unearned runs.

In the second game, Damonte scored five in the first and four in the fourth en route to an easy win.

Bailey Allen and McGowan had Carson’s only hits, both coming in the fourth inning when CHS scored its only run. Allen scored when Sara Brewer’s ball was mishandled.

DAYTON WINS TWICE

DAYTON — The Dust Devils improved to 3-0 with wins over South Tahoe (13-1) and Sparks (10-1) in Northern Division IA cross-over games.

Makayla Shadle continued her dominance in the circle, allowing just three hits on the day while striking out 26. Against Sparks, she struck out the side three different times en route to 16 strikeouts and a 2-hitter. Against South Tahoe, she fanned 10 and allowed one hit.

Against South Tahoe, Dayton snapped a scoreless tie with nine runs. Hannah Stevenson had a triple in the inning, while Shadle contributed a two-run hit. The Dust Devils scored five time in the inning on bases-loaded walks. Gemma Ramirez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three stolen bases.

Against Sparks, Dayton took a 2-0 lead in the first thanks to a two-run double by Shadle. After Sparks scored in the third, Dayton struck for two in the fourth. The big blow was a run-scoring double by Kati Nelson. The Dust Devils tacked on six more in the sixth with the big hit being an RBI triple by Lacey Combs.

DAYTON SPLITS TWO

DAYTON — Eli Sakow dropped down a squeeze bunt with the bases loaded to snap a 9-all tie and give the Dust Devils a 10-9 win over Sparks in a Northern Division IA baseball action.

Dayton trailed 9-7 when it came up in the seventh. Tim Rondeaux and Jaret Reed were hit by pitches. Marcos Saylor followed with a run-scoring single. With runners at second and third, Jack Phillips bunted for a single to load the bases. After Peter Scott struck out, Dom Selmi singled to score what appeared to be two runs. However, the Dust Devils got just one run. Reed was called out for malicious contact at the plate, while Selmi was sent back to third. That set the stage for Sakow’s bunt.

Selmi and Sakow led the Dust Devils with two hits apiece, Scott and Saylor added a hit each. Saylor scored three runs and Scott drove in two. Daren Baker Jr. picked up the win in relief.

Earlier Saturday, South Tahoe blanked Dayton 10-0 in five innings. Scott took the loss, yielding seven earned runs in two innings. Phillips and Selmi hit safely for Dayton.
