Prep Roundup: Spanish Springs tops Carson

SPARKS — Carson High’s playoff hopes took a severe hit when the Senators dropped a 6-2 decision to Spanish Springs on Thursday afternoon.

The loss dropped last-place Carson to 3-11 in league play with just a home doubleheader on Saturday (11 a.m.) left on the schedule. Both Wooster and Galena already had four wins entering play Thursday.

The Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first off Becka Breuer, who worked the first five innings before giving way to Kaitlyn Jimmy.

Alyssa Batastini had the big blow with a two-run triple and Sadye Roulund added a run-scoring single.

Carson closed the gap to 3-2 in the third when Sara Brewer singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bailey Allen, reached third when Kandis Tuttle was safe on an error and scored on the first of three singles by Jennifer Purcell. Breuer helped her own cause by driving home Purcell with a single.

The Cougars went up 5-2 in the fourth with two more runs, and added the final run of the game in the fifth.

Brette Lawrence went the distance for the Cougars, scattering eight hits and striking out eight. Breuer gave up eight hits and six runs, three earned. Carson had a tough day in the field, making four errors.

DOUGLAS TOPS LANCERS

RENO — The Tigers scored all their runs in the first three innings en route to an 8-3 win over McQueen on Thursday afternoon.

Douglas improved to 18-10 overall and 10-4 in league play.

Kelly Sonnemann went 3-for-3 with a double, two singles and three RBIs. Leonna Mortimer went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs and Makayla Shaver singled, homered and drove in two runs. Kaitlyn Bowman contributed two singles.

CARSON GIRLS WIN

The Carson girls JV squad won the Great Sierra Invite earlier this week at Carson High.

The Senators edged Damonte 119-118. On the boys side, Damonte won with 111 followed by Galena at 103.5 and Carson at 98.

The Carson girls won all four relay events (400, 800, 1600, 3200).

The quartet of Kierra Bell, Alison Greene, Lydia Cohen and Donya Mobaligh won the 400 in 56.14. In the 800, Greene, Cohen, Mobaligh and Samanatha Phelps combined for a 1:57.00. Cohen, Greene and Mobaligh teamed with Jessie Balkwell for a 4:38.92 in the 1600 relay, and Moritsa Mora, Greene, Shelby Brown and Balkwell ran an 11:08.55 in the 1600 relay.

Balkwell won the 800 in 2:47.25 and Brown won the 1600 in 6:06.52. Cohen was third in the 200 at 29.05, while Bell was second in the 100 hurdles at 18.89 and third in the triple jump at 26-10 1/2. Lauren Jensen was second in the discus at 75-5 and Abey Dudley was third at 74-3

Mathias William won the 800 in 2:15.76, while Michael Leiken won the 1600 in 5:12.65 and was fourth in the 800 at 2:20.96. Tony Xie was second in the 1600 (5:18.63) and third in the 800 (2:20.40). Wyatt Cartier won the 3200 in 11:50.14 and Josue Orozco was second in the discus at 113-7.

Carson was second in the 800 relay thanks to the efforts of Mhervin Dagdagan, Brandon Mandoki, Alex Estrada and Dilyn Rooker. Dagdagan, Rooker, Mandoki and Austin Lowe were third in the 400 relay. Carson was second in the 3200 relay as Caulin Bartley, Estrada, Ediuerto Martinez and Cartier ran a 9:34.27.

JC BASEBALL

Western Nevada College’s baseball team closes out its regular season today and Saturday with doubleheaders each day against College of Southern Idaho. The games start at noon each day at John L. Harvey Field.

WNC is currently third at 19-13. Southern Nevada leads at 22-10 and finishes with Colorado Northwestern which is 2-30. Salt Lake is second at 23-13 and has completed its regular season.

GOLF

RENO — Jake Jones led the Senators to their lowest team score of the season, a 438, at Wolf Run Golf Club on Thursday afternoon.

Jones shot 84; Nathan Swann, 86; Dalton Butler 87; Jonathan Porter, 88, Andy Cooper and Jake Zumbro 93.

The regional tournament is Monday at Red Hawk in Sparks with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. All five at-large spots are taken by Carson golfers.

“It is encouraging that we are playing our best golf as we head to the regional tournament, and the kids know they will have to better their current good play if they hope to grab spots in the state tournament,” said Jeff Rispin, Carson head coach.
