Carson softball swept by Galena, misses playoffs

Carson High’s softball team entered Saturday’s home doubleheader against Galena needing a sweep to have a chance to qualify for the regional tournament which starts on Tuesday.

The Senators weren’t up to the task, falling 6-1 and 4-0 to the Grizzlies to end the league season at 3-13 and falling to 9-22 overall.

Galena, by virtue of the sweep, grabbed the fourth and final playoff spot in the Sierra League with a 7-9 record. Damonte, Douglas and Bishop Manogue also made the playoffs from the Sierra League.

In the opener, Carson scored in the first off Stephanie Combs but that was the extent of the offense. The Senators’ only run came when Bailey Allen scored on the front end of a double steal.

Galena scored three in the third and three in the fifth off Jen Purcell, who gave up just one earned run and seven hits. She fanned five and walked three. Purcell also had two of her team’s three hits.

In the second game, Carson managed just five hits off Caitlyn Laycox. Kandis Tuttle, Purcell. Ellise McGowan, Skye Simpson and Megan Goodale each had one hit.

The Senators used Purcell for an inning in the circle, and she was followed by Kaitlyn Jimmy and Becka Breuer. Jimmy was tagged with the loss, giving up all four runs on just two hits in the third inning.

SWIMMING

Carson squads finish third

Carson High’s swim teams finished third at Saturday’s High Desert League championship at the Carson Aquatic Center.

Douglas won the boys title 442-439 over Reno, and Carson was third at 295. On the girls side, Douglas edged Galena 438-435.5. Carson finished with 267 points.

The Douglas girls squad won its seventh consecutive league title and the Tiger boys racked up their fifth straight league title at the High Desert League Championships.

The top finishers advance to next weekend’s regional meet, also at the Carson Aquatic Center. The meet begins Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Carson didn’t have a single event winner on the day,

On the boys side, Dagen Kipling was third in the 200 IM at 2:09.99 and sixth in the 100 breast at 1:11.79. Tallon Rauch was fourth in the 500 free at 5:18.71 and sixth in the 100 butterfly at 59.94. Cory Gentner was fifth in the 50 free at 25.35.

Carson grabbed a second in the 200 medley relay (1:48.17) thanks to the efforts of Rauch, Showalter, Casey Garrett and Kipling. In the 200 free relay, Monte Howell, Showalter. Gentner and Rauch finished fourth in 1:41.13. Carson was fifth in the 400 free relay, as Howell, Garrett, Gentner and Kipling swam a 3:46.72.

Eli Everest led the CHS girls with a second in the 200 free (2:07.40) and a third in the 500 free (5:34.78). Vanessa Rauch grabbed third place in the 100 (1:09.67), while Abigail Pittman was fourth in the 500 free (5:43.79) and sixth in the 100 fly (1:09.39). Sophie Holmes was fifth in the 50 free (27.71) and seventh in the 100 breast (1:17.19). Ashley Meyer was seventh in the 500 free (5:58.66) and eighth in the 100 fly (1:12.41).

The CHS team of Pittman, Everest, Rauch and Holmes took third in the 400 free relay (4:07.12) as Everest, Rauch, Pittman and Holmes were on the team. The same quartet was fourth in the 200 free relay in 1:52.44.

INDIVIDUAL TITLES

Douglas locked down league titles in nine individual events as well, setting up for a potentially strong showing at next week’s Northern Division I Regional Championships.

Kyle Johnston, Shelby Koontz and Shaelin Morefield each won two individual titles while Johnston contributed to the boys 200 free relay title.

The freshman Koontz, who entered Saturday with school records in three different events, broke another one by winning the 50 free league title in a blistering time of 24.02 seconds.

That gives her four different school records this year. Only eight individual, non-relay events are conducted in high school swimming.

Koontz added a title in the 100 free, Morefield won the girls 200 IM and the 100 fly and Johnston won the boys 100 fly and the 200 IM.

Savannah Chappell, Meagan Skilling, Emma Gray and Erica Chappell won the girls 200 medley relay and Kevin Smithen, Janosch Lancaster, Andy Esparza and Johnston won the boys 200 free relay.

Anthony Sellers won the league boys diving title with a score of 305.95.

The diving event was a tipping point for the boys squad as Jordan White took second and Tyler Vandenburg took fifth, adding a total of 52 points to Douglas’ overall team score.

In the league championships, the top 16 finishers in each event earn points for their teams, starting with 20 points for first and on down to 1 point for 16th.

In the 200 free, Erica Chappell took third, Jenna Broussard finished ninth and Jordan Chappell finished 15th.

Meagan Skilling was third in the 200 IM and Jenna Broussard was sixth in the 50 free. Emma Gray finished fourth in the 100 fly, Anna Lancaster was seventh and Rachel Chen finished sixth in the 100 freestyle. Skilling, Morefield, Emma Gray and Koontz took second in the 200 free relay. Savannah Chappell was second in the 100 back, with Emma Gray taking fourth.

Skilling finished second in the 100 breaststroke and Clara Gray was fifth. Morefield, Erica Chappell, Savannah Chappell and Koontz took second in the 400 free relay.

For the boys, Adam Dack, Eric Jacobs, Logan Killion and Jake VanBeuge took fifth in the 200 medley relay.

Lancaster was third in the 200 free and Ryan Chen was seventh in the 200. Esparza finished sixth in the 50 free. Kevin Smithen finished fourth in the 100 free and seventh in the 100 fly. In the 100 free, Esparza was fifth, Forbes was sixth and Robbie Resnik was eighth. Adam Dack took fourth in the 100 back, Auddie Anderson was ninth and Janosch Lancaster finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke, Jacobs was seventh and Garrett Seward was ninth.

Lancaster, Dack, Smithen and Johnston took second in the 400 free relay.
