Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels: Honor your mother, and not just today

SILVER DOLLAR: Loving, caring, compassionate, kind, bold, teaching, nurturing, altruistic, encouraging, supportive and inspiring.

Those are just some of the words that come to mind when we think about our mothers.

Today, we celebrate our moms and all they do for us.

No matter if we are old or young, if our mothers are living or have passed, we all have a special memory that brings a smile when we think of our mothers.

Today, whether our mothers live right down the road or 2,213 miles away, those lucky enough to still have our moms with us will share kind words to show appreciation, a laugh and maybe even a tear.

As Thane Cornell says on the next page, “it’s every day that mom deserves our most beloved bow.”

Moms truly are everything, and today we will remind them of that. But we should make a constituted effort to remind them of that Monday and subsequent days, too.

WOODEN NICKEL: To the news that Nevada kept the top spot on the list of the nation’s highest foreclosure rates for the second consecutive month. More than 1,900 homes received an initial notice of default in April, a 40 percent increase from last April. It looks like the slow housing recovery is going to continue to rear its ugly head in Nevada, mainly Las Vegas, for months to come.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Sherry Rupert, executive director of the Nevada Indian Commission, for being named to the Travel and Tourism Advisory Board by U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Rebecca Blank. Rupert was nominated for the post through the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association, of which she is the vice president.

“This opportunity is a huge step forward for Indian Country. Indian Country now has a seat at the table,” Rupert said. “I am honored the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association would look to me to be their representative.”
