Werner, Shirk bury the hatchet publicly

City Manager Larry Werner and Supervisor Jim Shirk on Thursday smoothed over their public flare-up, which occurred at the May 2 Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting.

“I crossed the line of acceptable public civility,” said Werner, addressing the board from the public forum podium as soon as public comment was sought Thursday morning. “I’m embarrassed and I am sorry.”

Shirk said he accepted Werner’s apology as the two shook hands.

The controversy developed during a recess late on May 2 after the board had dealt with the contentious issue of a lease for continuing operation of the Eagle Valley Golf Course complex.

Reportedly, Werner said he might or would throw Shirk out of City Hall after Shirk made comments about staff handling of lease issues, the hiring of a deputy city manager and asserted he would say whatever he pleased in meetings. The flap carried over when the meeting resumed, with Shirk saying he felt threatened, but none of the particulars were discussed in Thursday.
