Youth basketball team qualifies for national event

The Nevada Nets, an eighth-grade AAU basketball team based in Carson City, won a tournament in Sacramento recently to qualify for the upcoming national tournament in Anaheim June 27-30.

The team, which has been playing since October, won events in Susanville and Stockton. In both of those tournaments the team played in the ninth-grade division.

The team is coached by Jeremiah Gray, who assist Carlos Mendeguia with the Carson High varsity team.

The Nets will do some fundraisers to help pay for the trip, and they are asking for donations. Their first fundraiser is set for 5 p.m. June 6 at Mo & Sluggo’s. For those interested in donating, an account is set up at Bank of America (8892063341).

Hoop camp set for Carson Middle

The annual Carson Middle School Basketball Camp put on by Doug Whisler and John Paulson is set for June 10-13 at the school.

The cost is $110 per camper, and the camp is open to boys and girls entering grades 5-9.

The girls’ portion of the camp is from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. each day, and the boys go from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Stations include ball handling, motion offense, defense and post moves. There also will be daily contest and a 3-on-3 tournament. There will be two 5-on-5 games per day.

Bighorns seeking host families for the summer

The Nevada Bighorns, a nonprofit summer college baseball team, is looking for hot families for the coming season.

The team starts June 1 with a noon doubleheader against the Reno Astros at Truckee High School. The first home game is set for 2 p.m. June 6 against the Auburn Wildcats. The Bighorns will play their home games this year at the South Valley Complex in South Reno.

Players usually arrive around the end of May, and the season runs until July 28.

Also, the Bighorns’ annual benefit golf tournament is June 23 at Eagle Valley Golf Club. The cost is $80, and all proceeds help pay for umpires at home games, field maintenance and travel costs.

Quartet combines for best-ball victory

Jeff Gussow, Gary Sheerin, Rick Corelli and Jeremy Corelli combined to shoot a 169 to win Thunder Canyon Men’s Club weekly tournament.

The format was two best balls on the front and the best three balls on the back.

Bill Waldren, Bob Gates, Matt Vazeen and Randy Plymell were second at 171. Plymell was closest to the hole on No. 6.

Elaine Easterling, Kathy Cockerill and Shirley Westfall were the winners on the women’s side with a 163. Barbara Plymell, Elaine Colgan, Joann Sheerin and LeAnne Crowell were second at 168, Margaret Van Cleave was closes to the hole on No. 6.

Prause wins four skins at Carson Valley

Marc Prause walked away with four skins during the Carson Valley Men’s Golf Club skins game Sunday. Prause won skins on holes 10, 11, 14 and 15 for Flight A. Also winning in Flight A were Fred Coons on holes 3 and 13; Jack Sparman No. 4; Neil Linbarger on holes 6 and 17; Daryle Lewis on No. 8; and Ewald Burmeister on No. 18. Larry Lockwood took home three skins on holes 4, 5 and 11 in Flight B. Bruce Sanford won on holes 1 and 14; and Matthew Bujako won on hole 7.

Perdoma, Nenzel and Albers win best ball event

Fred Perdoma, Chris Nenzel and David Albers won the Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Golf Club team best ball event held at Thunder Canyon Golf and Country Club on May 15.

The team shot 52, edging out Marshall McCurdy, Tom Sawyer, Gene Gaston and Henry Teague at 53. Richard Torak, Fred Coons, Bill Hetherton and Dale Guy took third with a 55. Fourth place was a tie between the team of Roger Maxwell, Dino DiCianno, Al Citron and Ken Stone, and the team of Marty Marinez, Dan Rodgers, Vic Roscha and Bob Pluth. Both teams shot 56.

Winning closest to the pin was Frank Romano on No. 2. Tom Sawyer won on No. 6. While Bill Hetherton was closest on No. 8. Dino DiCiano won with the closest shot on holes 12 and 17.

21st annual clinic was a success

More than 700 kids registered for the 21st annual Fred Alexander Memorial Family Golf Clinic at Eagle Valley Golf Course.

Kids and families were treated to lessons by all of the professionals on long game, short game and how to continue to develop their love for the game. Kids were part of free raffles and lunch, and they got a club cut to their size that they get to keep, backpacks, T-shirts and a trick shot show by performer Peter Johncke.

Carson Sierra Youth Football will host signups from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Pizza Factory on U.S. Highway 50. It is the last day to register for Carson Sierra Youth Football and Cheer. Pumas having strong season

The U-13 CFC Pumas took home the championship trophy from one of the biggest tournaments in Northern California, with 224 boys and girls teams participating. The Pumas beat Manteca FC 99 8-0 and the Stockton Spartans 8-2. The team tied with St. Peters, 3-3. The won in the second set of penalty kicks against Atletico Santa Rosa. The CFC Pumas were invited to play against the Northern California Olympic Development Program team in Livermore, Calif., on May 5.

The Pumas tied their first game and won their second game 4-1. The team has been invited to play against the Regional Olympic Development Team in Sacramento in June. It also is undefeated in the Great Basin Youth Soccer League in the under-14 age division (as a under-13 team).
