Carson High Blue Jays split four games; Butler makes all-region for golf

The Carson Blue Jays split four games during the Memorial Day weekend.

On Saturday, the Blue Jays beat North Valleys, 4-0, and then lost to the Sierra Sun Devils, 11-2. On Sunday, Carson knocked off Douglas, 7-1. On Monday, Carson lost 10-4 to Sparks.

In the win over North Valleys, Dom Norton struck out four and allowed just four hits in his complete-game performance.

Carson took a 1-0 lead in the first when Gehrig Tucker tripled and scored on Norton’s infield out.

The Senators made it 3-0 in the third when Tucker singled, stole second, moved to third on a bunt by T.J. Thomsen and scored on Jace Zampirro’s double. Thomsen also scored on the double.

Carson completed the scoring in the fourth with a single run on a hit by Tucker.

Against the Sun Devils where they faced former teammates Luke Maher and Nick Domitrovich, Carson cut a 4-0 deficit to 4-2 in the top of the fifth. The Sun Devils put it out of reach with five in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth to sew it up.

Thomsen and Zampirro drove in the Carson runs with run-scoring singles. Chase Blueberg, Dustin Dutcher, Joe Birri and Connor Leahy also hit safely for the Senators.

Dutcher had a rough day on the mound, surrendering 10 runs and 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Maher homered for the Sun Devils, while Domitrovich doubled and singled.

In the win over Douglas, Brandon Allen pitched a complete-game 4-hitter. He threw 77 pitches, 50 for strikes. He fanned two and didn’t walk a batter.

Carson took a 2-0 lead in the second when Zampirro singled and Blueberg walked. Allen walked to load the bases with one out. Leahy’s fielder’s choice groundball scored the first run and Blueberg stole home for the second tally.

The Senators added three more in the third, the key blow being Thomsen’s two-run homer.

Carson added one in the fifth and one in the sixth. Douglas’ only score came in the sixth.

Zampirro and Chazz Nystrom each had three hits for CHS, while Thomsen and Tucker added two each. Kaleb Foster led Douglas with two hits and Dillon Lopez had the Tigers’ lone RBI.

In the loss to Sparks, Zampirro went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Thomsen also went 2-for-4. John Holton went 2-for-2.

GOLF

Carson High’s Dalton Butler was selected to the Northern Region second team after his performance at the recent regional tournament where he finished ninth.

Butler had a 36-hole total of 167. Jake Jones and Andrew Cooper were third-team honorees.

Manogue’s Harrison Holetz was Player of the Year and Manogue’s Chris Trevino was named Coach of the Year.
