Community sports roundup Reid, Baker shine in Mt. Sac Decathalon

WALNUT, Calif. — Corey Reid and Dakota Baker finished first and third, respectively, at the 36th annual Mt. Sac Decathalon held over the weekend.

Reid won the freshman-sophomore division with a score of 6,350, a career-best score.

Reid won the high jump (6-1 1/2), the 400 (49.21), the pole vault (11-11 3/4), the javelin (146-9) and the 1500 (4:19.06). He beat his nearest competitor by more than 1,000 points and broke four meet records in the process.

Baker, competing in his first decathalon, was third in the junior-senior division with 5,125 points.

Baker won the 110 high hurdles in 16.50.

A total of 24 athletes competed in the two-day event.

Perdomo team wins

Fred Perdomo, Chris Nenzel and David Albers shot a net 52 to win Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club best-ball event at Thunder Canyon on May 15. Marshall McCurdy, Tom Sawyer, Gene Gaston and Henry Teague were second with a 53, while Richard Torak, Fred Coons, Bill Hetherton and Dale Guy were next with a 55. There was a two-way tie for fourth at 56. Frank Romano, Sawyer, Hetherton and Dino DeCiano won closest-to-the-hole honors.

Prause wins skins game

Marc Prause recorded skins on four holes at the recent Carson Valley Men’s Club event on May 19.

Fred Coons and Neil Linbarger had two skins apiece, while Jack Sparman, Daryle Lewis and Ewald Burmeister all had one skin to round out Flight A participants.

Larry Lockwood had three skins to lead Flight B players. Bruce Sanford finished with two and Matthew Bujako added one.

Robert Van Nort shot a new 62 to win the CVGC men’s event on May 26. Jack Zippwald was second with a 65, while John Dorman, Marc Menezes, Gary Carsten and Matt Budjako all had 66s.

Ewald Burmeister was closest to the pin.

Quartet combines for win

Becky and Greg Martinelli, and Larry and Claudia Goodnight combined for a 124 to win Thunder Canyon’s 2 Best Balls of 4 event on May 27.

Second place went to Steve and Kathy Archer, and Lon and LeAnne Crowell at 125. Terry Gilmartin, Jim Fitzpatrick, Saul Singer and Paul Ricciardi combined for a 127 and third place.

Lynn Greenman and Singer won closest to the hole awards.

• In Thunder Canyon’s One in the Bucket tournament, Jeff Gussow, Jim Colgan, Mike Schellin and Riley Beckett had a net score of 134.

Bob Weise, Dan Culbert, Leland Sullivan and Randy Plymell were second at 144. Gary Sheerin was closest to the hole.

Lynn Greenman, Bianca Daykin, Sue Camp and Joyce Powell won for the women with a 135, one stroke better than Virginia Bonar, Kathy Cockerill, Karon Sullivan and Kathy Archer. Ellen Ewing was closest to the hole.

Cabela’s offering fly fishing class

RENO — Because of increased interest, Cabela’s has added a second two-hour fly fishing class to the existing weekly class offered every Saturday.

Beginning in June and continuing at least through July and possibly in August depending on interest, the store will offer a second class starting at 2:30 p.m. to complement the current 10 a.m. offering. All Cabela’s-sponsored classes and seminars are free.

Cabela’s outfitters have gone through extensive training by the Federation of Fly Fishers to learn how to effectively teach the material which includes discussion of equipment including rods, reels, lines and tippets; teaching and practice of proper knot tying; basic entomology so the various hatches and kinds of insects present at the different times of year are all covered in the classroom portion.

The second half of the class involves expert instruction and practice of proper casting technique using Cabela’s fly rods and reels.

Besides the fly fishing classes, Cabela’s also offers a free beginning fly tying class twice a month, the first and third Monday of the month at 7 p.m., throughout the year.

Additionally, the store will offer a weekly series on responsible gun ownership every Saturday at 11 a.m. June through August and repeat one of the topics the first Monday of the month at 7 p.m. from June through August.
