Senator Square: Proficiency exams this week at Carson High School

This week at Carson High School is proficiency testing. There will be delayed start days for all students not taking the exams. School will start at 10:30 a.m. Those taking tests will be required to be at school at the regular 7:45 a.m.

Friday returns to a normal schedule. Get lots of rest and eat healthy meals to do well on the tests. Good luck CHS students.

STUDENT COUNCIL REPORT

This week’s student of the week is Sam Bruketta. Sam is a stud at tennis, and is also an active member in Rock Climbing Club, National Honor Society, and Blue Crew. Not only is he involved with those clubs at the school, Sam is also our student body president and dedicates a lot of his time into organizing school events.

With a 4.3 grade-point average, Sam also excels academically. Thank you for being such a role model Sam!

A couple of things are going to be taking place this week at the high school. The annual dodge ball tournament will get underway this week, so expect nothing less than flying, red, rubber balls in the airways at lunch. Finals for dodge ball will be Friday in the big gym from 6-8 p.m.

VETERANS DAY CEREMONY

The Carson High School Naval Junior ROTC Unit will be hosting its annual Veterans Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday in Senator Square. The unit will be recognizing veterans from different wars.

Veterans are invited for refreshments after the ceremony complimentary from the Carson Culinary classes. If you have any questions, please contact the NJROTC Unit at 283-1780.

MOLE DAY REPORT

Ms. Emond wanted to give the community a follow up to Mole Day.

“I am excited to report that 26 students showed up at 6:02 am to celebrate Mole Day with coffee, donuts, juice, and milk. I have taken pics and will always cherish the memory because it is a different atmosphere than the regular classroom. It is festive — not to say that the classroom is not — and students, who before had no clue what I was like as a person, got a new perspective. It tends to bring those who participated a bit closer to the teachers they see celebrating what they showed up so early for.”

CHS is full of teachers like Ms. Emond who are dedicated professionals who go the extra mile for their students.

KEY CLUB ATTENDS

The CHS Key Club attended the California-Nevada-Hawaii Fall Rally at Six Flags in October. Nineteen members attended a very small representation among the 3,400 Key Club members that day. Students gained valuable information about Key Club and community spirit, through service.

All returned safely with a great attitude about spreading energy throughout CHS and the community. Our Key Club also helped this week at the Empire Elementary School Haunted House. We are still looking for new members — consider joining!

FROSH PARENT NIGHT

The Guidance Office will be presenting important information to parents of CHS freshmen 6 p.m. Wednesday in the school library. Topics covered will include graduation requirements, the four-year educational/career plan, scholarships and strategies for struggling students.

HOSA & FBLA ATTEND CONFERENCE

Eight members of Carson High School’s HOSA – Future Health Professionals chapter attended the Fall Leadership Extravaganza at the Nugget in Sparks. At this conference, the students learned leadership and etiquette skills, enjoyed guest speakers, explored some healthcare careers and skills in break-out sessions and met Nevada’s HOSA advisers and state officers.

Some of the students were recognized for their scores on their fall practice tests for the HOSA state competition. Elsa Maples received second place on the Health Care Issues exam and Ana Casas received third place on the Health Care Issues Exam.

Tony Xie received third place on the Medical Assistant Exam. Congratulations to these students!

Thirteen members of CHS FBLA also attended this conference. Freshman Shaylin Segura was recognized for placing third in the FBLA Principles and Procedures exam. FBLA members are busy raising money for March of Dimes and also to attend the state conference in Reno in April.

COLLEGE FAIR

There will be a college fair held at UNR in the Joe Crowley Student Union Building on today, November 3 from noon until 4 p.m. Students will be able to visit with college representatives from across the country, and will be able to attend seminars on financial aid and scholarships, writing a college essay, and the college experience. There will also be UNR campus tours, as well as a Career Exploration event. Don’t miss it!

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week’s senior in the spotlight is Elizabeth Medina. She carries a grade-point average of 3.77, and is taking a variety of honors and advanced-placement classes. She is working toward Carson High School’s Honors and Career and Technical Education diplomas, with her area of emphasis being photography.

Elizabeth is extremely hard-working. She works part-time at Papa Murphy’s Pizza, where she has been employed for the last two and a half years. She is also a member of Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), and has participated in Key Club and Environmental Club. She serves on the Youth Group Core Team at St. Theresa of Avila Church.

Next fall, she plans to attend UNR, where she will major in nursing. Carson High School is proud of all your hard work, Elizabeth.
