Briefly: Commodity food distribution is set

Friends In Service Helping, or FISH, will distribute free USDA commodity foods to Carson City families from 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 15 at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St. No one will be admitted before 9 a.m.

Families must sign an issuance sheet at the Community Center certifying household’s annual income does not exceed federal poverty guidelines which are monthly gross income of $1,436.25 for a single and $1,938.75 for a couple. For each additional household member, add $502.50. Proof of Carson City residency is required, and photo identification must be provided. Food may be picked up for the homebound or those unable to attend by bringing a signed note from them and their photo identification. Persons declaring overly large families for commodities will be asked for proof of family members.

FISH and the State Commodity Food Program order all food that is available. This month’s commodity foods include: cranberry juice, potato flakes, mixed fruit, canned pumpkin, northern beans, macaroni noodles, whole grain spaghetti, ham, and ground beef. Elks Lodge to award scholarships

The Tahoe-Douglas Elks Lodge 2670 is awarding scholarships to current Douglas County High School seniors.

Scholarship programs include the Elks National Foundation most valuable student; Legacy (open to students who have parents or relatives who are Elk members); Lodge 2670 most valuable student; Nevada State Elks Association most valuable student; vocational; and nursing. Applications can be completed online at www.elks.org/enf/scholars or www.nsea-elks.org and must be turned in to the Tahoe-Douglas Elks Lodge 2670, 1227 Kimmerling Road in Gardnerville, or mailed to PO Box 143, Minden, Nevada 89423-0143, no later than Dec. 7. Students are asked to see their school counselors for due dates and submission details for Lodge and State scholarships.

Tahoe-Douglas Lodge 2670 will award nine scholarships totaling $7,500. The Nevada State Elks will award a total of $26,000 in scholarships. The Elks National Foundation will fund nearly $3.6 million in college scholarships through its scholarship programs.

Volunteers sought for 9-1-1 Committee

The Carson City Board of Supervisors seeks volunteers to fill four open positions on the 9-1-1 Surcharge Advisory Committee.

Applicants must be Carson City residents and possess knowledge about telephone systems for reporting emergencies. Elected public officers are not eligible.

The 9-1-1 Surcharge Advisory Committee advises the Carson City Board of Supervisors in developing a 5-year master plan for improvement of the telephone system used for reporting emergencies in Carson City and oversees any money allocated for that purpose. Meetings are held at least quarterly. A minimum commitment of up to ten hours a month should be expected. Terms will expire on Dec. 31, 2015.

Applications are available at the Carson City Executive Offices, 201 N. Carson St., Suite 2, and will be accepted until Nov. 21.

Annual Thanksgiving food drive planned

Mike’s Pharmacy, 1007 N. Curry St., will hold its 15th annual Turkey Roundup from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 22.

Frozen turkeys and other Thanksgiving foods are sought for the Carson City Salvation Army to distribute to local food banks. Cash and credit card donations can be made at Mike’s Pharmacy on the day of the drive, or by calling 775-841-1400. Donations are used to purchase additional turkeys for distribution before Thanksgiving.
