BATTLE MOUNTAIN — A California driver accused of striking and killing two road workers in an Interstate 80 construction zone in Northern Nevada could face charges.
Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Jim Stewart says charges are pending the completion of his agency’s investigation of Tuesday’s accident east of Battle Mountain.
He told the Elko Daily Free Press that the NHP will send its report to the district attorney’s office, which will decide whether to press charges.
Authorities say 69-year-old driver Candace Gittins of Fort Bragg, Calif., was approaching stopped traffic along Interstate 80 when she swerved into orange construction barrels to avoid other cars.
She struck four workers employed by the company A-Core. Fifty-three-year-old Vicki Stenovich died at the scene, while 47-year-old Arthur Lucero died after being taken to a Reno hospital.
