The volunteer connection

This continues RSVP’s regular Sunday column of volunteer opportunities. Please do not call the agency directly, as it cannot process your application. Volunteers receive orientation and training and can receive out-of-pocket expenses such as mileage reimbursement.

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is looking for people to lead local 4-H youth programs in Carson City and Storey County. Program projects include small animals, pocket pets, golf, biking and shooting sports.

RSVP drivers are sought. RSVP provides mileage reimbursement for drivers, who must be 25 or older. It has vans if volunteers prefer not to use their own vehicles. It also provides free transportation for people with disabilities.

RSVP seeks volunteers to serve as companions to seniors who are home alone during the day. Volunteers might help with small tasks or have lunch, play cards or play games.

ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada seeks volunteers to tutor adults in English, GED, computer and citizenship studies. Training is provided, and a minimum of a two-hour commitment each week is required. The schedule is flexible.

The Carson City Fire Department seeks office assistant volunteers to perform receptionist and data-entry functions including answering phones, greeting customers and entering emergency medical services incident information into firehouse databases. The positions require basic computer and spreadsheet knowledge. Clerical experience is a plus.

The Trading Post of the Northern Nevada Correctional Center is looking for a storekeeper to handle sales and sale reporting in a retail environment. Sales and customer-service experience are a plus.

The Nevada State Museum is looking for volunteers to serve as tour guides. Schedules are flexible, and training is provided.

The Nevada State Health Insurance Assistance Program seeks volunteers to help Medicare beneficiaries with Medicare and related health insurance issues. They must be patient, enjoy working with seniors and be available at least six hours a month. Eighteen hours of initial SHIP training will be provided.

The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department has volunteer opportunities for daytime building monitors, custodians and maintenance workers.
