Senator Square: Warren Miller film is coming to Carson High

This will be a short week of school this week at CHS, as the district will be off Thursday and Friday to recognize the Thanksgiving holiday. Have a great Thanksgiving from the staff and students at CHS.

SKI CLUB FUNDRAISER

This December, celebrate the beginning of the greatest season of the year with “Ticket To Ride” from Warren Miller Entertainment. It explores the close relationship between humans and our vast natural environment, as skiers and snowboarders take a journey across the globe to shed light on the significance of being aware of one’s surroundings.

The film, put on by the CHS ski team, will be shown at 7 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Carson City Community Center. Tickets are available at the door.

KEY CLUB

The CHS Key Club volunteered this week at the Salvation Army Food Bank. We had a great time! Anyone interested in joining Key Club is welcome. See Mrs. Been in room 256.

DEBATE INFORMATION

Carson High Speech and Debate competed last weekend at the Spanish Springs tournament along with 18 other schools. Carson again broke a school record for the size of the team competing, taking 21 students.

Jacob Bertocchi and Luke Szatmary advanced to the final round of senior impromptu speaking and placed fifth and fourth, respectively. Cristina Rodriquez took fifth place in speaker points in novice Lincoln-Douglas debate. Her teammates Shaylin Segura and Sawyer Barnet claimed third and second in speaker points. Shaylin also took third overall in Lincoln-Douglas debate, an achievement all the more praiseworthy because this was her first tournament. Sawyer, who was competing in this event for the first time, went on to claim first place overall, arguing on the merits of attorney-client privilege.

The team recently won $2,500 from the Dolan Class Project to fund the program for the remainder of the season. The debate schedule remains busy as members from the team will compete Saturday the American Legion Speaking Competition, and the next competition will be at Douglas on Dec. 13-14.

CHS POOL CLUB

On Nov. 16, the CHS Pool Club conducted a junior billiards tournament at the Carson Lanes. Members competed against one another for a new pool cue that was donated by Mike Havens.

Casey Richards is a member who donates his time on Saturdays to the CHS Pool Club to assist and mentor these young people.

Havens and Richards play in different pool leagues in Carson City. Casey ran the tournament the same way professional tournaments are run. The winner of the pool cue was Skylar Belcher.

AIR FORCE VISIT

A representative from the Air Force Academy will be visiting Carson High School on Monday. The academy, in Colorado Springs, Colo., is a top university and is looking for academic excellence as well as participation and leadership in extracurricular activities. If you would like to learn more, plan on attending an informational session in the main office conference room at 1:15 p.m. Monday. Please visit the guidance office for a pass.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week the spotlight is on Elizabeth Jarett. Lizzy has kept a rigorous class load, taking many advanced-placement and honors courses. Despite her challenging course load, she has maintained a 4.55 weighted grade-point average.

Lizzy is a member of National Honor Society and HOSA and participates in the Environmental Club. She is in wind ensemble at CHS and her musical talents extend to playing percussion in the Territorial Youth Band, in which she gets to travel throughout the West Coast performing. She also plays in a praise and worship band at her church. She volunteers for the Salvation Army, where she has attained the rank of Salvation Army senior soldier.

Lizzy will attend UNR next year, majoring in veterinary science. She would like to have her own veterinary practice someday, specializing in small animals. Carson High School is proud to spotlight such a bright and promising individual. Well done, Lizzy, and much success in your future!
