Carson, Tigers battle to scoreless draw

Carson High’s girls soccer team remained in first place in the Sierra League after battling rival Douglas to a scoreless draw Tuesday night.

The tie leaves Carson at 7-0-1, while Douglas drops to 6-0-2. The rematch comes in the last regular-season match of the season in late October.

“The first 10 minutes we were amped up,” Carson coach Greg Lehman said. “The girls have been waiting for this game. Douglas is fast and physical. There are some things we need to continue to work on. Our first touch wasn’t as good as I’d like. We’ll get back to training. This was a good experience for the girls.”

“It was not the outcome we were hoping for,” Douglas coach Jenny Jaggard said after the match. “That can sometimes happen when you’re playing a good team. I feel like we possessed the ball more than Carson. It was a good match. I thought we lacked some creativity up top.”

Neither of the top scorers, Douglas’ McKenna Kynett or Carson’s Josilyn Daggs, were big factors in the game. Kynett managed just two shots on goal and Daggs had just one. Unofficially, Douglas outshot Carson 9-4.

“McKenna is a little off her game,” Jaggard said. “She’s had an injury. The timing was off.”

“I thought Lindy (Lehman), Valerie Sue (Meyer), Melissa (Glanzmann) and Katherine (Leist) played good defense,” coach Lehman said. “They stuck with Douglas the whole game.”

That’s not surprising. Goals are almost an aberration in Carson-Douglas games. They are physical battles, not for the weak of heart.

Carson’s two best opportunities in the first half came in the 15th and 32nd minute, respectively. Kiahna Pimental missed wide left, and then Daggs took a pass from Julie Torres, but was unable to get the ball by Corryne Millet. The Senators had a nice run in the 16th minute, but they were unable to get off a shot.

Douglas was more dominant in the second half, outshooting CHS 5-2.

The Tigers had three good looks in the first nine minutes, two by Alexis VonSchottenstein and one by Kynett. Karla Reyes handled all three shots. Carson had a good run in the 53rd minute, but Millet came out to corral the ball. Caitlin Jones put a free kick over the crossbar in the 26th minute and Kassidy Freitas powered a free kick at Reyes. Meyer put a free kick on goal for the Senators, their only shot in the final 40 minutes.

Carson hosts Galena on Saturday at 11 a.m.

JV: Mallory Otto scored twice and twin sister Molly added one score as Carson stopped Douglas 3-1.

The win gives Carson a 6-0 record.
