The Bodie Free Press reports of a terrible explosion on Tuesday in the Great Sierra tunnel at Tioga by which three men lost their lives. In the face of the Great Sierra tunnel, about 1,000 feet from the mouth, three men were drilling a 20-inch hole to set a charge when the cartridge exploded. The charge was an immense one with all three killed instantly.

100 years ago

A dispatch this morning from Gardnerville tells of the dead body of Jean Menta, a prominent and wealthy sheep owner from Wellington, who was found dead noon yesterday at a spring a short distance east of Mountain House. One arm, bent under the body, rested on a Colt automatic revolver. Four bullets were found in the back of his head. A watch, check for $300 and considerable money was found on him. His watch was running when he was found.

70 years ago

Nevada motorists used 21,626,332 gallons of gasoline since Jan. 1 of this year. Rationing attributed to a savings of 7,179,631 gallons for the eight-month period.

50 years ago

A stubborn defense by the Carson High football team plus some effective running by backfield men put the Senators over their first league obstacle of the year with an impressive 14-0 victory over the Elko Indians. The contest was the first Nevada “AA” Conference game for both teams.

30 years ago

Unclassified personnel working for the city received their first raise in nearly two years when the Board of Supervisors approved an average of 13 percent wage hike.
