Dayton spikers roll South Tahoe in 4

DAYTON — Ashley Vickers had 14 kills and 10 digs to lead Dayton High’s volleyball team to a 25-18, 19-25, 25-22 and 25-23 win over South Tahoe Tuesday night in a Division 1A volleyball match.

Dayton, 10-0 in league, plays at Spring Creek on Friday and at Elko on Saturday.

Madi Foley, coming off an ankle injury, had 10 kills and seven digs in just two games. Taryn Schriner had a strong floor game with a block, four kills and 22 digs, while Lettie Lynch had two aces, three kills, two blocks an assist and five digs. Kaylee Turner finished with five digs and four kills, Rachel Hadley had six digs and a kill. Shalia Powell, playing in place of setter Peach Coons, was outstanding with 30 assists and four digs. Coons will be out until next week with an ankle injury.

Virginia City sweeps

The Lady Muckers won 25-9 and 25-17, and 25-16 and 25-11 over Pyramid Lake over the weekend.

In the first match of the doubleheader, Nicole Huffman had four aces, four kills and four digs. Niki D’Agostino had three kills and five digs. In the second match, D’Agostino had seven kills and seven aces, while Eden Gomez and Sakura Brandon each had seven digs. Huffman had six aces.

Yerington routs Silver Stage

SILVER SPRINGS — Kassidy Lommori had 18 kills and 13 digs to lead Yerington to an easy 25-23, 25-10 and 25-9 win over Silver Stage Tuesday night.

Chloe Dane had 12 kills and 13 digs, and Angela Sciarini had four kills, 14 digs and two aces. Setter Ashley Rife contributed 39 assists, five kills and six digs. Jazzmin Bryan added five kills, a block and an ace.

Yerington is 18-9 overall.

TENNIS

Jones, doubles team advance

Jake Jones and the doubles team of Trevor Sollberger and Jace Zampirro were the only Carson players to advance to the second round of the NIAA Division I regionals at Carson High on Tuesday afternoon.

Jake Jones advanced to Friday’s second round after a 7-6 and 7-5 win. Jones won the tie-breaker 17-15. Carson’s two other singles entrants, Avery Whitt and Aaron Woodbury lost their opening round matches. Woodbury lost 6-3 and 6-2, while Whitt lost 6-1 and 6-2.

Sollberger and Zampirro beat a Spanish Springs team 6-0 and 6-2. The Senators’ other doubles entry, Sam Burketta and Kyle Kunz had a first-round bye.

The girls tournament starts today.

GOLF

Carson 5th after first day

RENO — Carson High’s golf team struggled to a fifth-place finish on the first day of the regional golf tournament at Rosewood Lakes.

Spanish Springs leads the way at 315 followed by McQueen 344, Manogue 347, Wooster 376, Carson 386, Reno 393, Douglas 396 and Reed 432.

Heather Evans led Carson with an 87, while Erica Gallegos shot 95. Callen Aten shot 100 and Taylor Krupp and Bethany Kniffen were at 104. Ashley Andreas had a 115.

Evans is tied for sixth place overall. The top two teams and the top five players not on advancing teams qualify for next week’s state tournament.

“After a rough couple of holes, she bounced back with some solid play,” coach Jeff Rispin said. “We know she can improve her score by 5-7 strokes, and we are optimistic she will be able to move up to a state qualifying spot.”

Carson knocks off Cougars

SPARKS — Valerie Sue Meyer, Kiahna Pimental and Mayra Oliveras scored a goal apiece to lead Carson to a 3-1 come-from-behind win over Spanish Springs in a Division I crossover match Tuesday night.

The win boosted Carson to 9-1-2 heading into Saturday’s 9 a.m. home match against Damonte Ranch.

The game was scoreless in the first half, but then Spanish Springs scored in approximately the 50th minute for a 1-0 lead. Meyer tied it at 1, and then Pimental scored what proved to be the game winner.

“I thought we did a better job in the final third,” CHS coach Greg Lehman said. “We played a good first half, but just couldn’t find the back of the net. We did a good job of moving the ball around. In the second half, we were able to find the back of the net.”

JV: The Senators and Spanish Springs played to a 2-2 tie. Nahim Gutierrez and Galilea Cid scored for Carson.
