Senator Square: Band to march in Nevada Day Parade

STUDENT COUNCIL REPORT

Last week’s Student of the Week was Marilyn Gomez. Marilyn went above and beyond in helping make this year’s Homecoming a success. She made everything with the bonfire come together wonderfully. Marylin is the student body historian, and is also involved in Link Crew.

Our Student of the Week for this week is Tana Greene. Tana is a sophomore at Carson High and is involved in Recycling Team, is a squad leader for NJROTC, involved in FBLA, Key Club, Yield and GSA. Tana just one of many who is making this school a better place for everyone, but today, we celebrate her!

“Come join our band, and give a cheer for Carson High.” Do you just love to hear the school song so much you just can’t get enough of it? Come support your band as they march and compete in the Nevada Day Parade this Saturday!

As for the rest of Carson High, it’s a pretty slow week. A lot of students are still recovering from an unforgettable Homecoming Week. Fall sports are still in motion, and for a detailed list of all the sports and all the activities going on at the school log onto nnd1.org. Be safe and have a great Nevada Day!

LIBRARY FUNDRAISER

Carson High School Library and Carson City Orthodontics have partnered in a Smile & Feel Good campaign to support CHS students. For every new like on the www.facebook.com/CarsonCityOrthodontics page between now and Nevada Day, Carson City Orthodontics will donate $1 to the Carson High School Library.

The wish list for new books is long; together we can make a difference! Please support the CHS Library and like the Carson City Orthodontics Facebook page by Friday.

SPORTS SIGN-UPS

Winter sport sign-ups will be 5:30-6:30 p.m. Oct. 28 in the north foyer.

All returning athletes will complete a form which includes updated information with a parent signature. New athletes must complete an athletic packet including clearance from the library and finance office, available online at www.carsonhigh.com or in the athletic office. All completed forms and packets must be received by the athletic office by Nov. 8.

Winter sport tryouts will begin Nov. 16. Completed forms and packets will be accepted in the athletic office before, after school, and during breaks only. No drop offs will be accepted. Contact the athletic office at 283-1900 for further information.

MOLE DAY

Mole Day science celebration will take place in room 205 at CHS at 6 a.m. Wednesday. There are three classes of science proficiency students and one freshmen science class that are invited to be a part of this global celebration in science.

The Mole is a quantity in science that represents a very large number — 6.02 x 1023 power — because one atom is so small that it cannot be seen by the human eye. But if you put a mole of atoms together, now we can visualize whatever atom we are referring to. Hence, the date and time are a significant part of when to celebrate Mole Day. This has been celebrated at CHS now for four years and proves to be a memory that students do not forget if they show up.

SPEECH & DEBATE

Carson High Speech and Debate competed at the Reno High school tournament last weekend along with 18 other teams from Northern Nevada. The team left its mark on the event and brought home a wealth of trophies and awards.

Starting with speech events Cristina Rodriguez and Shane Morton placed third, second and second in the duo interpretation rounds performing a cutting of “Alice in Wonderland.”

Jacob Bertocchi and Luke Szatmary took second overall in senior duo interpretation with their dark comedy on the Aztec afterlife. Bailee Barber and Jazmyn Conde took first in novice duo interpretation for their piece titled “Your Money’s Worth,” which takes a hard look at mental illness. Not only did they win the event they also took first place in every round.

Carson was even more successful in debate events. Bailee Barber and Jazmyn Conde placed third in novice public forum, debating over the merits of unilateral military force. Bailee was also the seventh best speaker overall, a strong showing in a field of 46 competitors.

Cristina Rodriguez claimed fourth overall in speaker points in novice Lincoln-Douglas debate. Rebecca Matley, competing in senior Lincoln-Douglas on the topic of compulsory voting took home the first place speaker award and 1st place overall, beating out Reno high in a split decision in the final round.

Jacob Bertocchi and Luke Szatmary competed together in senior public forum, earning fourth and third place speaking point awards. They also topped off Carson’s tournament by placing first overall in public forum, going undefeated the entire tournament and knocking off Douglas in the final round. As a team, Carson placed in the top 3 in 34 separate rounds.

NHS NEWS

Thank you to all of the students and community members who participated in the blood drive on Oct. 11. Our goal was 119 donors and we had 132 successful donors and collected 176 units of blood. Our next project is the Coat Drive.

Please bring new or gently worn kids’ coats to room 224. All coats go directly to children who live in Carson City on camp grounds, in motels, or share a dwelling with two or more families. Everybody is welcome to participate. Let’s keep our community warm!

Bordewich Elementary Library needs your help. Empire Elementary Fall Carnival is Wednesday, and they need volunteers.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week’s senior spotlight is on Adam Peterson. Adam has a grade-point average of 4.6 and is continuing his academic pursuits with several advanced-placement and honors classes.

Adam is a member of Link Crew, Blue Crew, National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America and Skills USA. Adam is also employed as a tutor in the CHS math tutoring and MASH program. In addition to his academics, Adam is a talented musician and is currently the organist at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints. He has played the piano for 13 years.

Adam was awarded his Eagle Scout in 2010 and is still active in the Boy Scout program as a mentor for younger scouts. He has spent many hours over the last eight years volunteering at Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

Next year Adam plans to pursue a degree in public administration or business at Brigham Young University. Carson High School is very proud of this amazing young man and looks forward to his future accomplishments.
