Carson volleyball keeps playoff hopes alive

Behind the setting of Danielle Good (28 assists) the Carson volleyball team picked up a much-needed three game sweep of Damonte Ranch (25-13, 25-19, 25-22) on Thursday.

“I am proud of the them,” coach Robert Maw said. “It was a great team effort.”

Maw credited Good for keeping Damonte off balance by moving the ball around. He also credited Jaycie Roberts and Savannah Smith with playing strong defense.

Roberts had 16 digs. Smith had five kills and seven digs. Gina Peacock and Yana Spence each had six kills. Juliana Anderson had five kills and two aces. Sarah Christl had two aces.

The sweep keeps Carson alive for the fourth playoff spot, at 6-8, heading into games at Wooster on Tuesday and at Douglas on Thursday.

“We need a couple of ‘Ws’ to keep us in the playoff spot,” Maw said about next week.

Dayton sweeps Fallon

Dayton improved to 15-0 in league with a 25-16, 25-14 and 25-14 sweep of Fallon on Thursday night.

Coach Monica Halverson was pleased with the team’s performance. Halverson and the players have been talking about having stronger — more focused — warmups so the Dust Devils are ready to play from the first point on.

“The intensity and teamwork was there from the get-go,” she said.

Madi Foley had 16 kills and 15 digs to lead Dayton. Ashley Vickers had a strong all-around game with four aces, five kills and four digs.

Lettie Lynch added four digs. Setter Peach Coons had 23 assists and five aces, and Taryn Schriner had nine digs.

Dayton plays next Friday against Fernley.

SOCCER

Carson girls tie Reno

Despite tying Reno, Carson girls soccer coach Greg Lehman said the Senators played their best match of the year on Thursday.

Carson and Reno tied at 3, in a game made up after being postponed due to smoke from the wildfire in Yosemite earlier this year.

“The girls played really well,” Lehman said. “That’s one of the best all-around efforts.”

Scoring for Carson were: Mayra Olivares, Chantal Torres and Josilyn Daggs.

Lehman was pleased with the Senators’ urgency to score and their high-pressure defense.

The Senators (10-1-4) play at Douglas (12-1-2) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday before heading into the playoffs.

JV: Carson and Reno played to a scoreless tie.

Dayton: The Dust Devil girls lost to Elko 5-0 on Thursday. No other information was provided.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Carson boys and girls cross country teams both finished third at Thursday’s Northern Division I conference meet at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno.

The boys team, running without Daniel Jauregui and Ian Van Rensselaer, finished third (80 points) behind Galena (28) and Douglas (45).

Leading Carson was Tylar Chester seventh overall in 18:11. Anthony Cacioppo was eighth overall at 18:25. Wyatt Cartier (20th in 19:17), Tony Xie (22nd in 19:22) and Michael Leiken (23rd in 19:25) rounded out Carson’s scores.

“They ran pretty good for not having two of our top guys,” said Carson coach Pete Sinnott.

In the girls race, Carson finished third (70 points), behind Douglas (33) and Galena (56).

Carson suffered a setback when one of its top runners, Alex Drozdoff, dropped out of the race mid-way through. Sinnott believes if Drozdoff would have finished Carson would have finished behind Douglas. Drozdoff has been battling a leg injury.

Leading Carson was Eveline Delgado in third at 20:23. She finished behind Douglas’ duo of Lindsey Adams (19:10) and Moriah Munyan (20:11).

Carson’s Cindy Juchtzer finished fourth (20:45), Shelby Brown was 15th (22:48), and Alison Green was 27th in 23:08 to round out Carson’s scorers.

“It is a tough league,” Sinnott said, adding that Northern Nevada teams are expected to compete for the state title.

Both Carson teams are fighting to advance to the state meet by qualifying in the top three during next Saturday’s regional meet at Rancho San Rafael,

Sinnott feels both Senator teams have a good chance, if healthy.

Elissa wins at ROP invite

Aaron Elissa won the 2.85-mile ROP Invitational at Lampe Park for the Dayton cross country team on Thursday.

Rounding out the Dayton finishers were: JJ Ply in 11th (17:18); Nick Langstaff in 17th (18:03); Brady Heusser in 20th (18:42); Thomas Liddle in 21st (18:49); Tyler Brown in 22nd (18:50) and Toby Tapley in 24th (19:00)

In the girls race, Hanna Elissa came in seventh place with a time of 20:53.

In JV action: Jared Logan finished 10th (19:45), Colton Hansen was 13th (20:58) and Mitchell Fialkowski was 14th (21:08).

GOLF

Terada finishes second

LAS VEGAS — Douglas High School’s Koko Terada narrowly missed in her bid for a state title on Thursday when she lost to Katrina Prendergast of Spanish Springs in a playoff at the NIAA Division I State Girls Golf Championship at Bear’s Best.

Prendergast sank a 6-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to win the title. Prendergast made up three shots on the final three holes to force the playoff.

Terada shot 4-over par 76 on Thursday to finish the 36-hole regulation at 148.

She made the turn on Thursday at 40 and then charged through the back nine holes with an even-par 36.

Mercedes Khumnark of Green Valley finished one shot behind at 149. The top three players are all juniors.

Spanish Springs finished the tournament with a 646 total (320-326) to successfully defend its state team championship.
