30th Tahoe golf tournament set for Oct. 14

The 20th annual Boys & Girls Club of South Lake Tahoe Golf Tournament is scheduled for Oct. 14 at Edgewood Golf Club.

Players can sign up for one of two formats, a four-person scramble or best ball format where each golfer plays his/her own shot. The cost is $220, which includes 18-holes, cart, tee prizes, a buffet breakfast, beverages throughout the day, hor d’oeuvres and drinks at the awards party plus a chance to win exciting prizes at the silent auction.

Hamilton, Bowser win

Vern Hamilton and Leroy Bowser shot a net 125 to win Thunder Canyon’s Ned Eyre Invitational on Aug. 29.

John Anderson and Joe Murnin combined for a 128, while Larry Greenman and Ron Babey tied for third at 129 along with Jeff Gussow and Phil Zaragoza.

Menezes, Smitreski tie

Mark Menezes and Ken Smitreski each shot a net 69 to tie for first place in Flight A at Carson Valley Men’s Club stroke play event on Sept. 1.

Luke McClean was third with a 72. In Flight B, Roger Hala won with a 65, one stroke better than Matt Budjako. Bill Allen was third with a 70. Brent Halderman and Gary Carsten tied for the top spot in Flight C with a 69, while Neil Bain won Flight D with a 64, two strokes better than Paul Finan.

Gaston wins at Empire

Gene Gaston shot a net 61 to win Flight A at the recent Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club tournament. Mike Rogers was second with a 67, while Gary Dalen and John Masiello tied for third at 68.

Nils Sharpe won Flight B with a 64, three shots better than Jack Medeiros and four shots better than Marshall McCurdy.

Tennis tourney Sept. 13-15

The Carson Tennis Club’s annual Fall Classic is set for Sept. 13-15 at Centennial Park and Carson High courts.

There will be competition in men’s and women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

Cheerleading camp set

The Carson High cheerleaders are holding a camp for boys and girls in first through eighth grade on Sept. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon at CHS.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and participants are asked to enter through the north door of Carson High. Those who participate will perform at halftime of Carson’s game on Sept. 20. The cost is $30 for returning participants and $35 for new participants. A free T-shirt will be provided to every camper.

Miller duo triumphs

Dayton’s Jeff Miller and Fallon’s Marco Digiacinto played solid golf in the 2-man total score format in the final round to win the low gross title in the 22nd annual Dayton Valley Palmer Club Member-Guest tournament Aug. 23-25.

Miller and Digiacinto won with a low gross 36-hole total of 9-over par 225, where the first round was played with a 2-man best ball format. Dayton’s Dave Goles and Markus Zinke of Gardnerville finished second in low gross.

Low net honors went to John Peters and Kay Berntson, both from Dayton, who finished with an 11-under par net total of 205. Second low net went to Brent Kidd of Sparks and Darrell Clark of Portland, Ore. Greg Newman and Joe Cartlidge, both of Reno, claimed the third low net award.

Newman and Cartlidge also won the annual horse race played following the first round. Gary Leiper of Dayton and Louis Moreno of Ventura, Calif., won the back nine Par 3 Shootout played as a tournament warm-up on Friday.
