His lectures are free, but made serviceable in paying off debts of the Catholic Churches he visits. Scientific weapons: Prof. Davidson, scientist of the coast, has been surveying geological expeditions and several times been in tight places with Indians. His telescopes and theodolites always frightened them. He would let them look through his telescope and after that he could run the tribe. These things inspired the Indians with awe, and they regarded him as an emissary from another world.

Uncle Sam: Precious metals are needed for the war effort — tungsten, vanadium, mercury, molybdenum, manganese, tin, iron and nickel. The U.S. is reported ready to invest $3.9 million in “grubstaking” hunt for critical and essential mineral deposits.

The Douglas County Commission approved the 101-room Carson Valley Inn and Carson Valley will have its first hotel-casino. The architect is Pete Wilday who states that the hotel-casino will have a “country inn look.”
