Dayton looks for its first win of season at Truckee

The biggest surprise in Week 2 in Division 1A football was Lowry’s 48-0 shellacking of perennial powerhouse Truckee last Saturday. It no doubt sent shockwaves throughout the high school football community.

It wasn’t that Lowry won, because the Buckaroos are a pretty good club themselves, it was the margin of victory.

So, no doubt Truckee will be steamed today at 1:30 p.m. when Dayton, 0-2, comes to visit.

“I would anticipate that they are ticked off,” Turner said. “I’ve seen film on them, and Lowry handled them pretty well. The one good thing about playing at Truckee is that you get five days of practice. It’s always tough to play them. You are not only playing against them, you are playing against tradition.

“They are running pretty much the same stuff on both sides of the ball. They have some pretty good guys back (RB Thor Retzlaff, QB Louden Smith, RB Austin Vance and WR Sean Daniel).”

Unfortunately for the Dust Devils, this has been a series dominated by Truckee. Dayton grabbed a 13-7 win in 2006, but Truckee has won every game since. In the last nine games (2004-2012), Truckee has outscored Dayton 356-88, an average of 38-9 per contest.

But this is a different Truckee team with a new coach, Josh Ivens, who faces a lot of pressure to keep the winning tradition going.

“If we get a victory on Saturday, it will be huge for us and huge for our program,” Turner said. “You can’t think they’re done. They still have that 12th man there (at home).”

Dayton will have to get it done without two-way starter Skyler Berntson (separated shoulder) and possibly Jesus Castaneda (ankle). Both were injured in last week’s loss to Spring Creek. Bernston had rushed for 45 yards and had 46 yards receiving in two games. Quinn Santana and John Aguilar are expected to take up the slack in the running game to complement Austin Fletcher, who has gained 200 of the team’s 278 rushing yards this season. Fletcher also has eight catches for 98 yards. Quarterback Davis Winebarger has completed 17 of 27 passes for 234 yards with three interceptions, all in the season-opening loss to Lovelock.

Fletcher leads the team in tackles with 22 and he has one interception. Josh Koch has 15 stops and Aguilar has 13.

Smith completed jut 6 of 24 passes against Lowry, as the Wolverines managed just 154 yards total offense. Truckee turned it over three times on offense.

For the first time in eight years, Truckee is beatable. Lowry is the new bully on the block.
