Senator Square: Lip sync this week at Carson High School

STUDENT COUNCIL REPORT

Starting off the week with Monday, 6-9 p.m. will be the National Honor Society Induction Ceremony in the Big Gym at the High School.

Tuesday, there will be a school board meeting in the Community Center at 7 p.m. The school board meeting is a great place for anyone who happens to be curious about what is going on and what is upcoming with the all the schools and their events.

Thursday, flu shots will be delivered to all the students that signed up for one.

The Fall Sports Marathon will continue though out this week. For a detailed list of all the events happening at the high school, go to www.carsonhigh.com and select CHS calendar.

HOSA FUNDRAISER

The CHS HOSA students will be hosting a car wash and rummage sale in the U at the front of Carson High School from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Pre-sale car wash tickets are $3 and can be purchased from any HOSA student, but will cost $5 the day of the car wash.

All proceeds go to help send HOSA students to state and national conferences to compete and represent Carson City. They also will be accepting any donated rummage sale items (just bring them to the school that Saturday morning). It’s a good way to get rid of that junk in the garage. LIP SYNC TRYOUTS

Tryouts for this year’s lip sync will be Monday. They will be right after school and we don’t have AB55 that day; therefore, even if you play a sport you still can be in Lip Sync. There will be prizes for everyone who participates in an act, with a grand prize for the winner. There can be no more than six people to a group, and four and a half minutes per act.

BOWLING CLUB NEWS

Are you interested in bowling for the bowling club? Pre-season bowling will start 2:30 p.m. Monday at Gold Dust West. The cost is $1 per game. Coaches will be there. Come see what we are all about and get a jump on your bowling this year. Any questions, see Mrs. Mannschreck or Ms. Been in room 256. Please have your paperwork signed and turned in so you can bowl.

SPEECH & DEBATE RESULTS

The Carson High Speech and Debate team competed in the first tournament of the season with many new faces. Congratulations to Donya Mobaligh for placing fifth in foreign extemporaneous speaking and taking third overall in Congress speech points for her chamber. Cristina Rodriquez also broke into finals for the first time in Impromptu and Lincoln Douglas debate, earning sixth and third, respectively.

The debate team’s next competition is Oct. 11 and 12 at Reno High School.

NEW CLUB AT CHS

Want to be part of something bigger? Want to make a difference in your community’s life. Come join Y.I.E.L.D. It is a club that not only gives you a better alternative than being a follower but also helps you inform your community. Y.I.E.L.D. meetings are Wednesdays during lunch in Mrs. Been’s room, room 256.

NEW STAFF AT CHS

A new addition to the English department is Ms. Emilee Riggin who teaches freshman and sophomore English.

Although she is well-known in the district for her experience subbing and long-term subbing last year at CMS. She graduated from Carson High in 2006 and attended Southern Oregon University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in English education and her master’s in teaching.

She is enlisted as the senior class adviser and is an avid supporter of the volleyball program, having been a player when she was in school. Her current hobbies include being completely engrossed in her career, planning her wedding and spending time with her family. Welcome home Emilee and welcome to the CHS staff!

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week the spotlight is on Bryan Dones. Bryan maintains a weighted grade-point average of 4.36. Along with numerous advanced-placement courses, he also has two honors courses and Naval Junior ROTC.

Bryan is planning on going to college when he graduates. He is undecided on where to attend, but is interested in colleges on the West Coast. Bryan would like to major in mathematics.

Since his freshman year, Bryan has been a member of NJROTC. He is their Supply Officer, and his duties include being in charge of the entire inventory for the program. Bryan participates on Carson High School’s soccer team as well as being a member of the Future Business Leaders of America.

CHS is proud of Bryan and we wish him well in the future.
