Wooster scores early to beat Carson boys

Carson High’s normally reliable defense was lackluster in the first half, and the Senators paid a hefty price.

Visiting Wooster scored twice in the first 20 minutes on goals by Edgar and Ramon Ceja, and then held off a late flurry by Carson en route to a 2-1 Sierra League boys soccer win Wednesday night.

The loss snapped Carson’s four-game win streak. Carson is 4-2 heading into Saturday’s game at North Valleys.

The defense, which was without Adam Shoaf, struggled early on as did the offense. Carson went 29 minutes before registering its first shot on goal, and Wooster had nine attempts in that same span.

“Our defense got off to a slow start,” said assistant coach Mike Alvarez, who ran the team for Mehdi Samii, who was on a business trip. “Wooster was playing well, using short, quick passes. The second half we made a nice comeback and had a couple of chances to tie it up and weren’t able to convert.”

After being held scoreless for the first 59 minutes, the Senators broke through to make it 2-1 on Ryan Galvan’s sixth goal of the season. Galvan has scored in all five games he’s played this year, and now leads the team in scoring.

That seemed to spur the Senators, who had three good opportunities to tie the match and earn a point. All three opportunities went through Cristian Hernandez.

In the 67th minute, Hernandez hit the left post on a free kick, and 10 minutes later he made a nice cross which didn’t result in a shot. His best opportunity was also his last. In stoppage time, Hernandez outraced two defenders to reach a loose ball. He sent a screamer toward the left corner, only to see it hit the left post and carom away.

Gustavo Villagrana played well in goal, stopping eight shots. Angel Gomez played well on defense in the second half, and Miguel Ortiz was solid in the midfield.

JV: The Senators grabbed a 2-1 win on the strength of goals by Octavio Virueta and Jaime Saldana.

Carson girls take 4th

RENO — Carson shot its best round in three years at Arrowcreek Golf Club, but only managed a fourth-place finish at the weekly Sierra League tournament.

The Senators shot a 399. Heather Evans led the way with a 92 followed by a 101 for Bethany Kniffen, a 102 by Taylor Krupp, a 104 for Erica Gallegos, a 106 by Callen Aten and a non-scoring 109 by Ashley Andreas.

Dayton sweeps Sparks

SPARKS — Madi Foley pounded 14 kills, served up four aces and recorded two blocks to lead the Dust Devils to a 25-3, 25-7 and 25-6 win over the Railroaders to improve to 6-0 in Division 1A action on Wednesday night.

Coach Monica Halverson played 10 players in the lopsided match. Shalia Powell, the back-up setter had 10 assists, one fewer than starter Peach Coons.

Ashley Vickers had four aces, four digs and four kills, while Cheyanne Strong finished with two aces and three kills. Taryn Schriner had three aces, Coons four and Lettie Lynch had two. Dayton finished with 21 service aces.

Virginia City edges Whittell

ZEPHYR COVE — Virginia City edged Whittell, 3-2, in a varsity volleyball match on Tuesday.

Nikki D’Agostino led the way with 19 kills, 15 digs and five aces, and setter Nicole Huffman had 10 digs and 18 assists. Eden Gomez contributed 12 digs, while Bethany Fuller added six kills.
