Firewood-cutting permits available

In preparation for winter, the Bureau of Land Management is selling firewood-cutting permits.

Pinyon pine and Utah juniper permits cost $10 per cord, and only dead trees may be cut.

One-cord permits are valid for 30 days; two-cord permits are valid for up to 60 days and three or more -cord permits are valid for up to 90 days.

Up to 10 cords may be purchased before a commercial firewood-cutting permit is required.

Wood cutters must have permits while cutting wood, and during dry weather, a fire extinguisher, shovel and bucket of water should be handy.

All chain saws must be equipped with spark arresters.

Maps of authorized firewood-cutting areas and stipulations are provided with permits.

Permits for the Carson City district can be obtained from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at BLM-Carson City District Office, 5665 Morgan Mill Road; from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, 1477 U.S. Highway 395 in Reno; from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily at the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce, 3 Webster St. in Markleeville; from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at UNR Cooperative Extension Office, 111 Sheckler Road in Fallon; and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday at the Galena Creek Visitor Center on Mount Rose Highway in Reno.

After Oct. 15, permits at the Galena Creek Visitor Center will be available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

All locations accept cash or check, and the Carson City BLM location can process credit card orders in person or over the phone.
