Volunteers sought for Search and Rescue Unit

The Carson City Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit will hold an open orientation for volunteer recruits from 9-11 a.m. Oct. 12 in the Ormsby Room at the Sheriff’s Office, 911 E. Musser St.

Volunteers must have interest or experience in backcountry hiking; off-road travel; swiftwater rescue; clue collection; scene preservation; missing person search; first aid; communication; military or law enforcement; orienteering; logistics support; traffic control; community service events; and grant writing or fundraising.

New members are responsible for buying personal uniforms and related equipment. Most positions require good physical condition, and ongoing training is provided by local and national experts in search and rescue.

Members are on call for training, business meetings and call-outs. There are minimum service hours and education requirements to become a permanent member. For more information or to reserve a space at the orientation, call 775-720-5663.
