Drivers too often fail to yield to pedestrians

I’m writing to you as a concerned citizen about the traffic on Fairview Drive and Saliman Road. Every couple of days, I walk to the market on the corner of Fairview and Saliman. I push the “walk” button and wait for the green light and the walk light. Once they both come on, I cross the street; however, there seems to be a few drivers that either don’t see or care that I or any other pedestrian have the right of way.

I need more than two hands to count how many times I almost got hit legally crossing that intersection. I do this during the day, so I presume I am visible to the drivers. Maybe that’s my mistake.

So what’s the answer? We all have the right to feel safe when we legally cross any street. Are drivers in that big of a hurry that they are not concerned about the safety of pedestrians? Drivers, pay attention to your driving, not the end of your destination.

Carson is corrupted, and residents just sit idly by

Corruption seems to abound in Carson City, and what are our elected officials and management staff doing about it? In my opinion, more of the same. Over the past couple of years, I’ve seen numerous protests and “crime scene” banners all over town, usually in front of state or city agencies. We’ve all read about the recent controversies involving city employees, and some of us wondered how could this happen in our town?

As taxpayers and citizens of Carson City, we are owed fair representation by those we elect into office or those who make their living on the taxpayer’s dime. This city belongs to us. I encourage everyone reading this to research the issues and vote and tell others to do the same. No matter your race or socioeconomic status, we can all work together to make real changes. Every vote counts, and it’s the only way some of our self-serving officials will be forced to do the right thing. In business as in government, all problems originate from the top. It’s time we take our city back — through the ballot box — and create a government that is truly for the people.

Inaction on our part will only enable more of the same corruption, nepotism, sexism, racism and injustice that our town has unfortunately become known for. I think Bob Marley really said it best, “Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights. Get up, stand up, don’t give up the fight.”
