Prep Roundup: Carson softball pounds Damonte

RENO — Bailey Allen and Michelle Perry drove in four runs apiece to lead Carson High’s softball team to an easy 23-6 win over Damonte Ranch in a Division I softball game Tuesday afternoon.

The teams will meet again Thursday at 3:45 p.m. at Carson High.

Carson scored four in the first, six in the third, two in the fourth and 11 in the fifth to put a mercy rule defeat on the Mustangs.

The Senators scored four in the first when Aubrey Northrup singled and moved to third on a double by Jennifer Purcell. Perry was safe on a fielder’s choice which scored Northrup. Becka Breuer singled home a run and winning pitcher Kaitlyn Jimmy followed with a single. Malia Tiffer reached on an error, scoring the final run of the inning.

Damonte cut the lead to 4-3 with two in the first and one in the second, but Carson roared back with six in the third for a 10-3 lead.

Purcell and Perry reached on errors to open the inning. Breuer followed with a run-scoring single and Tiffer was safe on an error for the second straight at-bat. Allen followed with a run-scoring sacrifice and Northrup added an RBI single.

The Senators stretched their lead to 12-2 thanks to run-scoring hits by Jimmy and Breuer.

Carson enjoyed its best inning of the season in the fifth, scoring 11 runs. The big hits were a three-run triple by Allen and a two-run homer by Perry.

Breuer went 4-for-5 to lead Carson, while Northrup went 3-for-5. Perry and Purcell added two hits apiece, while Allen had her bases-loaded triple.

Jimmy went the distance, allowing eight hits and four earned runs.

Douglas 4, Bishop Manogue 3

MINDEN — Freshman Corryne Diaz delivered a two-strike, two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday to lift the Douglas softball team to a 4-3 win at home against Bishop Manogue.

The left-hand swinging Diaz went with a 1-2 pitch for a single to left field that drove in Katie Chieffo with the tying run, and Maddie Parks scored when the hit was misplayed for an error to give the Tigers their the go-ahead run.

For Douglas (9-2-1 overall, 7-0 league), it marked the third one-run win in six days.

Kali Sargent pitched a complete game five-hitter to earn the win. The junior right-hander finished with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Manogue took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Megan Lawson’s double and went up 3-2 in the fifth inning when pinch hitter Amanda Fritsche slammed a two-out, two-run homer.

Parks and Chieffo both hit 2-for-3 to lead the Tigers’ eight-hit attack.

BASEBALL

Carson drops two

It was a tough day at the yard for the Carson Senators, who dropped two games at Ron McNutt Field on the second day of the Spanish Springs Invitational.

Carson started Tuesday with a 3-2 loss to Spanish Springs, and followed that up with an 8-5 loss to McQueen.

Carson, 7-7 on the season, plays at North Valleys at 4 p.m. today in another tournament game. Carson, which has played the entire tournament without shortstop Gehrig Tucker (injured against Damonte) is 0-3 in the tourney.

In the opener, Carson took a 2-0 lead in the third inning thanks to a double by Dom Norton.

Spanish Springs bounced back with all three of its runs in the fourth to take the lead for the first time, and the Cougars made that lead hold up. Carson did get the tying run to second base, but was unable to come up with the clutch hit.

Josiah Pongasi, Norton, Jace Zampirro, Chase Blueberg, Brandon Allen and John Holton all hit safely for the Senators.

Norton pitched well for the Senators, allowing three runs, one earned, and only four hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked three.

Ryan Anderson pitched well for the Cougars, allowing two runs and five hits over six innings.

In the nightcap, McQueen broke open a 1-1 tie with five fourth-inning runs en route to the victory.

Rob Dalpe, who went 3-for-5, drove in two runs in the big fourth-inning surge by the Lancers.

Carson fought back with three runs in the fourth to make it 6-4 thanks to a couple of McQueen errors, a double by Seamus Burns and a single by hot-hitting Josiah Pongasi.

McQueen made it 8-5 with two runs off reliever Joe Nelson. Carson scored in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Holton.

Carson, which was outhit 13-5, got hits from Burns, Connor Pradere, Blueberg, Dustin Dutcher and Pongasi.
