Pitching will be key for CHS down the stretch

One thing has become painfully evident 11 games into Carson High’s baseball season — a lack of consistent pitching efforts.

In 11 games, Carson’s team ERA was 6.3 with a WHIP of 2.304. The staff has given up 112 hits and 63 earned runs in 69 innings. Location has been an issue, as CHS pitchers have walked 47 batters and hit 12 batters thus far this season.

The most effective starter thus far has been Chase Blueberg, but he too struggled in a 10-9 win over Damonte last weekend.

Carson needs to get Jace Zampirro healthy and back on the mound. A healthy Zampirro teamed up with Blueberg and Dustin Dutcher a dependable rotation.

The Senators are hitting the ball a ton this season, but you can’t expect hitting to compensate for sub-par pitching every game, or can you? Only time will tell on that one.

And while we’re on the topic of baseball, I’m sure I wasn’t the only fantasy baseball owner to grimace with the news that Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers was going on the disabled list. Not the way you want to start the season.

There are some guys available in my 12-team league, but nobody who can put up the type of numbers Kershaw can compile.

While on vacation in Albuquerque this past week, I got a nice surprise.

Barry Sacks, who was on Chris Ault’s staff for many years, has been hired to coach the defensive line at the University of New Mexico.

Sacks is the second Nevada coach to join Bob Davie’s staff at New Mexico. The other is Scott Baumgartner, who coached wide receivers for Ault.

Davie said Sacks is “animated” on the practice field. For anybody who covered Nevada football, animated is a perfect word to describe the bubbly Sacks.

“You can’t ask young people to be that way if you aren’t that way yourself,” Sacks told the Albuquerque Journal earlier this week.

Sacks had a chance to join the Lobos after the 2011 season, but ended up at the University of California coaching defense for Sonny Dykes, a former head coach at Louisiana Tech.

Sacks was made a scapegoat when Cal’s defense struggled mightily last season. He was fired after just one season.

Hopefully the 56-year-old Sacks has found a permanent home with the Lobos, who are looking to get their program back on track under the guidance of Davie, the former Notre Dame head coach.

It was certainly nice to see the 76ers not break the NBA all-time record for consecutive losses on March 29.

The streak ended at 26 games, tying the 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers record for futility. The win at home snapped an 18-game home losing streak which was one shy of another NBA record.

It was the first win in more than two months for Philly.

A reminder to local football fans, the University of Nevada has scheduled a practice at Carson High School at 1 p.m. April 12.
