Our old friend Ben Curler escaped a serious mishap recently. According to the Belmont Courier he was traveling between Mammoth and San Springs and, in ascending the summit, the snow storm was so severe he was forced to return to a house 10 miles distant, where he remained for the night. The next day he started with a guide and made it safely.

130 years ago

Harry Hardup. For some months, an odd genius named John F. Elliot has been connected to the Evening Chronicle and frequently wrote articles under the nom de plume “Harry Hardup.” The articles followed an original vein and were enjoyed by all. Having been put under a good salary on regular staff, Mr. Hardup was arrested yesterday for forging a name to a check for $8. In case he should come down to Carson to board permanently with Warden Bell, the Appeal will make an effort to get him on its staff.

100 years ago

The management of the Eureka-Palisade railroad asserts that they will suspend operations May 31, at which time their contracts for ore expire, unless the Railroad commission dismisses the suit brought against them. They claim rates required by the commission to be to low.

70 years ago

Chief of Police Herman Smoot jailed two youths and a woman Monday night for the theft of a Reno car. Smoot noticed the car parked out near the OX-bo ranch. It had been driven until it ran out of gas and then abandoned.

50 years ago

An Ormsby County land buyer seeking a zoning change to permit the installation of a drive-in theater was advised to proceed through the normal process. The property was located between Sherman Lane and Nye Lane.

30 years ago
