Senator Square: It’s spring break time at Carson City schools

Hello, spring! Students and staff will be taking a small break this week. School resumes on April 22. Happy Easter to everyone!

PROM WINNERS

Congratulations to seniors Porfirio Jauregui and Faithann Hodorowicz for being crowned king and queen of 2014 CHS Prom.

ROTARY FUNDRAISER

Carson Sunset Rotary is hosting a fundraiser to benefit the Rotary Youth Leadership and Rotary Youth Exchange programs. Every year, nine CHS student are chosen to attend Leadership Camp and transform their lives. The program proved so successful that it has been expanded to the eighth grade as well.

The Carson Victory Rollers have agreed to donate their time and talents in order to help generate the necessary funds for these worthwhile programs. They will be showcasing an exhibition grudge match,Blue vs. Gold, (Rotary colors) on April 26 at the Carson Nugget parking lot. Tickets are $5. Concessions will be sold and raffles with prizes and free games for the kids.

All proceeds will go to Carson Sunset Rotary Youth Programs. T-shirts will be sold that night also to help with the fundraising efforts. For more information, contact Lisa Stocke-Koop at lstockekoop@carson.k12.nv.us.

FALL SPORTS INFO NIGHT

Carson High School athletic and parent information meeting will be held 6 p.m. April 23, in the big gym. Information regarding fall sign ups, physicals for next school year, sport packet information, eligibility requirement, drug and concussion testing, social medial concerns and more will be discussed. SPEECH/DEBATE INFO

Carson High Speech and Debate wrapped up a very busy March hosting the district tournament. The tournament included 249 entries from 16 different schools.

CHS would like to thank the roughly 90 community volunteers who came out to judge at this major event. We would especially like to thank Carson Valley Inn for donating all the student food for Friday night. We’d also like to thank Del Taco, Port of Subs and Costco for catering student meals during the three day event, and Grandma Hatties for catering the judge meals. Finally, we would like to thank Senator Reid for sending a representative to participate.

Carson High debaters were very successful at the tournament. More than half of the team survived the first round of eliminations. Carson High won the cumulative trophy point award this year. Junior students Jacob Bertocchi and Luke Szatmary qualified to compete at nationals in duo interpretation for their piece titled “How Did you Die Again?” Rebecca Matley also qualified to compete at nationals with her Original Oratory addressing the issue of rape culture in America. Nationals will be June 15-20 in Kansas City, Mo., and the team looks forward to representing Carson City and Nevada on the national stage.

CHS THANKS BUSINESSES

The following businesses were recognized as a CHS Business of the Month at our April staff meeting. Owners and managers from the following businesses were on hand to receive plaques to hang in their businesses. They were Chili’s, 6-Week Workout, WNC’s Jack C. Davis Observatory, Capital Ford, Lone Mountain Vet, Carson City Public Library, Carson Nugget and Gold Dust West. Thank you for your support of our high school academics, athletics and activities.

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY WINNERS

CHS recently held the National History Day competition. The following students, as winners in their categories, have all been invited to compete at the state competition at UNR on April 26.

HEALTH STUDENTS FAIR

The Kidney Walk and Health fair at CHS was a great successful last week. Thanks to DaVita Dialysis for the support in the Kidney Walk, and all of the students who created a project for the Health Fair. We had more than 40 displays last Saturday.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week’s senior in the spotlight is Elsa Maples. She has a 4.21 grade-point average and is taking various honors and advanced-placement classes. Elsa has contributed to Carson High School greatly in her four years here. She has been a member of the Health Occupations Students of America for the last two years, and is serving as reporter in that organization.

She has also participated in National Honor Society for the last three years, Link Crew for the last two, and was the dance captain for musical theater during her sophomore year. Outside of school, Elsa has danced with Western Nevada Performing Arts since she was 10, and is on their competitive team. She has also volunteered for Food for Thought since she was a freshman.

Last summer, she went on a mission trip to Guatemala with Hearts in Motion and worked in an eyeglass clinic there; she was inspired to organize an eyeglass donation to Guatemala for her senior project. Not only has Elsa contributed to her school throughout her time here, but she has also contributed significantly to our community.

Carson High School is proud of her accomplishments, and we wish her the best as she attends UNR where she plans to major in speech pathology.
