Carson squads second in Comstock meet

Carson High’s boys and girls varsity track squads finished second at the annual Comstock Classic Saturday at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

Douglas won the boys meet with 168.5, Carson was at 138 and Dayton at 135. On the girls side, Douglas won with 166.83, Carson followed at 154.33 and Manogue was next at 82. The Dayton girls were fifth at 45.5.

“We had a good, solid day,” coach Robert Maw said. “We were on sprng break, so only about half the team was parcticing (all week). We were missing a few people.

“The highlight on the grils side was Josilyn (Daggs) in the 100 hurdles. She won with a 16.37 which puts her at No. 2 in the north right now. That was with four-stepping the hurdles and into a headwind. She hasn’t been at full strength all year. She also did a good job in the 200 (second place). Ian (Schulz) had a good day in the discus (152) en route to a fourth-place finish. That was 10 feet further than he’s thrown. Anthony (Cacioppo) ran well in the 1600 (2nd, 4:50.66).”

Corey Reid won the 300 hurdles in 41.75 and was third in the pole vault at 12-6, Aaron Woodbury won the triple jump at 40-1, was fourth in the pole vault at 12-6 and fifth in the long jump at 19-7. Cacioppo was also second in the 3200 (11:17.73). Dakota Baker grabbed a second in the 110 high hurdles (16.50) and was third in the high jump at 6-feet. Joey Thurman was third in the 200 (24.95) and Asa Carter was fourth in the 400 (54.28).

In relay events, the Carson boys were first in the 800 relay (1:32.91), first in the sprint medley relay (1:37.42), second in the distance medley relay (12:37.50), third in the 400 relay (46.27) and fourth in the 1600 relay (4:27.65.

Besides Daggs’ efforts, the CHS girls got long jump (16-6 1/2) and triple jump (36-9 3/4) wins from Madison Preston plus a second place in the high jump (4-10). Valerie Sue Meyer won the 100 in 13.22. Makaela Bigley won the 3200 (13:05.34) and was second in the 1600 (6:04.06). Sahara Winder was second in the 300 hurdles (54.52), Lauren Hudak was second in the 800 (2:39.08).

The Carson girls were second in the 3200 relay (10:49.21), second in the 400 relay (51.0) and second in the distance medley relay (14:33.37). Lauren Weddell was second in the 3200 (14:46,71).

Thee Dayton boys were led by Aaron Elissa, Benji Ply, Josh Koch and Andrew Goodman.

Ply won the 100 hurdles (16.49) and the high jump (6-2), and he was second in the pole vault at 13-feet. Elissa won the 1600 (4:46.58) and was third in the 800 at 2:14.13. Goodman won the 400 (51.45). Koch won the discus (170-6) and was fourth in the shot at 43-6 1/2). Zach Hawley, a sophomore, won the shot (49-1 1/2) and was third in the discus at 156-2. Thomas Liddle was fourth in the 3200 (13:15.40).

The Dayton girls were led by Kaylee Turner, who won the shot (33-5) and the discus (124-11). Lettie Lynch won the 200 (27.11) and was second in the 400 (63.15).

Carson won both JV meets.

Caroline Gabica won the high jump (4-10) and the triple jump (33-2 1/2) for the CHS girls, Adam Maw won the triple jump (35-6) and Corey Jasper won the discus (119-11).

Dayton’s Samantha Cassinelli won the shot (26-6 1/2) and the discus (77-6). Jon Ply won the 110 hurdles and high jump, and was second in the 300 hurdles. Brady Heuser won the 1600 for the Dust Devils.

BASEBALL

Galena 13, Douglas 3

RENO — Galena scored seven runs on eight hits in the third inning Saturday to break away for a victory against Douglas.

Coupled with its win at Douglas on Thursday, Galena (14-6 overall, 11-1 league) was able to strengthen its hold on second-place in the Northern Division I race. Douglas (15-6 overall, 9-3 league) came into the two-game series tied for second-place.

The Tigers scored all three of their runs and collected five of six hits in the second inning. Kaleb Foster doubled, followed by singles from Matt Santos, Kyle Johnson, Dusten Plante and Zachary Dixon to push across three runs to tie the score at 3-all.

Dayton sweeps Sparks

SPARKS — Dayton swept the Railroaders, 6-2 and 11-1.

Michael Dieneman pitched the first game going the distance striking out 10. Marcos Saylor led with the bat going 3-for-4 with two doubles. Mason Haines struck out seven batters in the nightcap. Jack Phillips went 2 for 3 with a double, homer and three RBI, and Cole Hummel went 2-for-3.

SOFTBALL

Galena 6, Douglas 3

RENO — Galena scored four runs in the fourth inning Saturday to take charge on its way to a Northern Division win at home against Douglas.

Douglas (15-7-2 overall, 11-3 league) scored twice in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Galena (13-9 overall, 8-4 league) answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning and then added two more runs in the sixth to push the lead to 6-1.

Sophomore Alyssa Martinez went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead Galena’s 12-hit attack. Aubrey Slocum also hit 3-for-4 with two RBI and Baileigh Loux 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Caitlin Laycox pitched a complete game eight-hitter to go with seven strikeouts and no walks on a day when Galena committed four errors. The senior right-hander has won six straight starts as the Grizzlies have completed successive series sweeps against Carson, Wooster and Douglas.
