Samii steps down at CHS soccer coach

Mehdi Samii, who took the Carson High boys soccer team to the state playoffs two years ago, resigned Friday.

Samii, who is an off-campus coach, cited growing business as the reason for stepping down.

“The company I work for acquired another company,” Samii said. “I just didn’t have enough time to be there for all the practices and games. It wasn’t fair to the boys.”

Samii guided Carson to a 10-3-3 regular-season record a year ago and a trip to the zone playoffs. His two-year record was 20-9-8, including a regional title in 2012.

“Mehdi did a very good job for us,” said Bob Bateman, Carson High athletic director. “He is such a high-character guy. He regrettably turned in his resignation. We will open up the job.”

Samii was assisted by Michael Alvarez and Jorge Ortiz last year. Samii recommended that the school consider them as his successors. Alvarez has worked with the program for two years, and the fact that he is bilingual is a plus because CHS traditionally has a lot of Hispanic players. He ran the team for at least one game when Samii was away on business.

Dayton girls stop Fallon

DAYTON — Makaya Shadle struck out 11 and drove in a run to lead Dayton to a 5-3 win over Fallon on Friday in a Northern 1A game. Shadle allowed two earned runs and walked six batters.

After Fallon took a 1-0 lead, Dayton evened the score in the bottom of the inning when Shadle drove home Mallory Dickenson, who had reached on a double. Dayton added single runs in the third and fourth. Nichole Vienneau drove in the third-inning run and Dickenson doubled leading to the run in the fourth.

Fallon tied the game at 3 with two in the fifth thanks to two Dayton errors. Dickenson tripled home the go-ahead run in the sixth and then scored on a passed ball.

Dickenson led the way with three hits and Vienneau added two along with Hannah Stevenson.

Dayton, 6-0 in league, visits Fallon today at 11 for a doubleheader.

WNC drops three to Snow

EPHRAIM, Utah — Hits were hard to come by for Western Nevada College’s softball team in the first two games of its tripleheader against Snow College on Friday afternoon.

The Wildcats managed just seven hits and one run in losing 8-0 in the opener and 6-1 in the second game of the Scenic West Athletic Conference battle. WNC played better in the third game, but dropped a 10-6 decision.

Taylor Allman stopped WNC on just two hits in the opener — singles by Katilyn Covione and Katelyn Bomar. She retired 11 of the last 12 batters she faced.

Kenzie Rasmussen gave Snow the only run it needed with a one-out homer in the first. Elise Sutherland ended the game with nobody out in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run homer.

Covione was saddled with the loss, allowing eight runs, five earned and 12 hits in four innings. The game was stopped in the fifth on the mercy rule.

In the second game, WNC loaded the bases but came up empty. Belle Stoddard retired 14 of the next 15 hitters. Covione’s solo homer in the sixth enabled WNC to avoid a second shutout. Carlee Beck took the loss, giving up six runs and 10 hits in six innings. Bomar, Lindsey Ashbaugh, Heather Septon and Jenny Rechel collected the other WNC hits.

Nicole Weiss hit a three-run homer to give Snow a 4-0 lead in the third.

In the third game, the Wildcats loaded the bases with one out in the first frame on three free passes. A wild pitch allowed Madi Gonzalez to score the first run. Two more walks pushed Covione across the plate, and Septon and Meghan Hospodka scored the third and fourth runs of the rally on wild pitches.

Cara McCarthy doubled in Makenzie Hospodka in the third inning to put WNC ahead 5-2, but Snow outscored the Wildcats 8-1 the rest of the way.

Gonzalez led the Wildcats at the plate with three walks and a hit.

The losses dropped WNC to 12-39 overall, including 9-33 in the SWAC.

WNC baseball today, Sunday

The WNC men take the field against in-state rival College of Southern Nevada today at noon.

The teams will play seven- and nine-inning games today and two seven-inning games Sunday. CSN is 13-11 and WNC is 16-8.

Busy day at CHS

Carson High will be a busy site Saturday, as the Senators have home baseball and softball doubleheaders against Reno, and the school is hosting a track meet.

The track meet, which has 29 teams, gets started at 9 a.m. The baseball and softball doubleheaders start at 11 a.m.
