Arnold puts on a show during Clovis event

It was quite a setting in Clovis last weekend. The lights were shining bright and the people came out in droves to watch the annual Old Town Clovis Street Vault Championship.

Former Carson High and Idaho State vaulter Mike Arnold competed in the event and won the men’s title with an effort of 17-9 ¾. He cleared that height on his third attempt which came around 10 p.m. Arnold tried to go 18-11, but missed three times. His lifetime best is 18-8.

“It’s amazing,” Arnold told Fresno Bee reporter Andy Boogaard. “It’s a phenomenal experience in front of a great crowd, and that’s what you do it for — to put on a show and have a lot of fun.”

The 23-year-old Arnold still has his eye on the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. He indicated he would have to clear 19-feet to have a chance to make the Olympics.

Virginia City baseball coach Fred Bendure, a former Carson High baseball player, was named the coach of the year for the American Family Insurance all-USA Nevada baseball team.

The Muckers won the Division IV regional title on the weekend of May 16-17, and a week later, captured the Division IV state title.

It was the first state title in 15 years for the Muckers.

Bendure graduated from Carson High and then played at the University of Nevada for former Boston Red Sox star Jackie Jensen.

Kudos to Bendure, who also had a coaching stint at Douglas High.

Kudos to Conor Harber from Western Nevada College, who was selected to represent the United States at the 80th annual National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kan.

Harber was one of 13 pitchers selected for the 26-man roster. Harber was a third-team All-American. He is expected to anchor the staff along with Aaron Schnurbusch from Johnson County, Kan.

Harber struck out 79 hitters in 65.2 innings of work for D.J. Whittemore’s club. He is headed to the University of Oregon next year where he is expected to pitch and play the outfield.

I want to puke every time I look at Nevada’s home basketball schedule for the upcoming season.

It includes CalPoly San Luis Obispo, Adams State, Cal, Northwest Christian and Fullerton State.

Adams State. Seriously? Northwest Christian. Are you kidding me. Adams State is a Division II school and Northwest Christian is an NAIA school. I find it hard to believe coach David Carter couldn’t do any better than that.

California is the only decent team on the home schedule.

Nevada at one time hosted a tournament. Why did that go away? The women’s tournament seems to draw good teams every year. I’d love to see the men host a tournament and it should be able to draw one name school.

Who wants to watch no names year after year. If I’m the home fans, I’d start complaining about it.
