West Nile detected in Washoe County standing water

RENO — Washoe County health officials are warning West Nile virus has been detected in the county.

The Washoe County Health District says in a statement a small water pool near Spanish Springs tested positive for the virus.

Health officials will increase surveillance of mosquitoes and began treating surrounding areas on Thursday.

Officials warn residents should remove any standing water around their homes.

The mosquito-carried virus can cause symptoms such as fever, fatigue, aches and rash.
