Silver Dollars and Wooden Nickels: It’s fair to say fair was worthwhile

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: All the reviews are in and generally they were favorable of the initial installment of the NV150 Fair. All those involved from the organizers to the kids who showed animals along with others such as the city, the chamber of commerce, law enforcement, the Carson City Visitors Bureau, Casino Fandango and Costco made this first-time event a worthwhile affair. Admittedly, the main goal of any first-time event is for it to be held without any major glitches. That was accomplished. And because there were no major glitches, the city and organizers should immediately commit to holding another fair at Fuji Park next summer. Chances are a small admission fee may have to be charged, but that’s OK. We’ve written before how important it is for a community like Carson City to hold a fair, so it should definitely continue.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the nonprofit Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care center to all the work its doing this summer in its effort to rehabilitate bear cubs.

SILVER DOLLAR: City Manager Nick Marano receives his first Silver Dollar in leading the effort to make the city’s new animal shelter a no-kill shelter. And while we’re at it, Linda Buchanan receives a Silver Dollar as well for opening the Catmandu Adoption Center and Sanctuary.

WOODEN NICKEL: Another Wooden Nickel to Xerox — we really don’t know who else to give it to — for the effects of it botching the Silver State Health Exchange still being felt. It’s no surprise Nevadans who originally enrolled in the health exchange will have to enroll again in November, but it’s still something that should have never happened in the first place.
