Former Carson High and current University of Nevada pitcher Adam Whitt was named the recipient of the Russell Ford Award which is given to the Cape Cod Baseball League’s top reliever.
Whitt, a reliever for the Cotuit Kettleers, was 5-0 with four saves in 19 appearances. His earned run average of 1.00 was the lowest in the league, and his five wins tied for second. In 36 innings, Whitt fanned 34 batters and walked just 12.
In addition, Whitt made the all-star team and pitched an inning of scoreless relief to help his West teammates to a 5-0 win over the East. Whitt’s team is currently participating in the league playoffs.
Whitt is expected to carry the load in the Nevada bullpen this spring. Whitt led the Pack with seven saves a year ago en route to a 5-5 record in 30 appearances. Whitt struck out 54 hitters.

Former CHS star Colby Blueberg is 1-0 with a 0.40 ERA with the Eugene Emeralds in the Pacific Northwest League.
Blueberg, who signed with the San Diego Padres this summer, has appeared in 12 games. In 22.2 innings, he’s allowed 18 hits and just one earned run. He has struck out 26 and walked four and allowed just one homer.

Carson High, which is playing against Clayton Valley Charter at the Honor Bowl on Aug. 30 at 8 p.m. at Del Orio High School, has teamed up with Todd Carl at Graphics Factory to offer a t-shirt or hoodie to raise charitable funds for the Honor Group and Wounded Warrior Project. All profits will be donated to the Honor Group. the organizer of the event, to assist in the purchase of a track chair for a disabled vet.

The Clayton Valley-Carson game is one of seven being conducted during the two-day event. Damonte Ranch is playing at 5 p.m. on Friday against Elk Grove. Reed is playing at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Fallon is playing at 5 p.m. on Saturday followed by the Carson game.
And, speaking of Carson football, the annual preseason Boosters Club bash is set for Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. There will be dinner, live music and the Hall of Fame induction. Tickets are being sold through the Carson High Football Boosters Club and Bret Andreas, who owns a local insurance agency.

What a difference one left-hander makes. John Lester, whom Oakland acquired in a trade with the Boston Red Sox recently, has been stellar in his two starts.
The latest was a three-hit shutout.
Lester said he understood the reason for the trade, and said he’d like to go back to Boston next year. John, bite your tongue. You are on a winning team, one with the abiiity to be a playoff team at the least and a World Series winner at its best. The Red Sox aren’t a real good team right now. I hope Oakland GM Billy Beane will spend some money and keep Lester. Ditto for Jeff Samardzija, who was obtained earlier in the year from the Chicago Cubs. Samardzjia, you would think, would want to play for a playoff team, which was something that was never going to happen in Chicago. All media reports, however, indicate he will take the most money when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season.
