School districts will notify households of their children’s eligibility for free or reduced-price meals if families receive assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations or the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

Households will also be notified of any child’s eligibility for free meals if the individual child is “Other Source Categorically Eligible” because the child is categorized as homeless, migrant, or runaway as defined by law; or enrolled in an eligible Head Start, Even Start or pre-kindergarten class as defined in by law.

No application is required for free meal benefits for these households. If any children are not listed on the eligibility notice and they should be, contact the school district or school. If households are not notified by the school of their free meal benefits, the parent or guardian are asked to contact the school.

Free and reduced price Income Eligibility Guidelines are available online at http://www.fns.usda.gov/school-meals/income-eligibility-guidelines. To decline free meal benefits, contact the school or school district.
