LOVELOCK — Dayton fell to 1-1 on the season after losing 59-47 to Lovelock Tuesday night in a nonleague boys basketball game.

Dayton returns to action Thursday at 4 p.m. against Mesa Verde in the Truckee Tournament.

“We played just OK,” Dayton coach Jason Santos said. “We couldn’t handle their on-the-ball pressure. We played hard and gave a good effort. We just can’t handle ball pressure right now.”

Jon Joiner led Dayton with 15 points and Ty Pearson added 12. Davis Winebarger finished with nine.

LOVELOCK — Angela Sikora, Dayton’s top returner, scored all but two of the team’s points and added six rebounds and five steals in a season-opening 70-22 loss to Lovelock.

The loss spoiled the debut of new Dayton coach Kelly Frantz, who took over for Ben Halverson.

“We ran our offense well and broke their press over and over,” Frantz said. “Our defense was lacking and we couldn’t stop them. We gave up lay-ups all the second half.

“We came out slow and never stepped it up. We definitely got to see our weaknesses and now we can go forward focused on where we need to improve.”
